Yes! Teams are allowed to take inspiration from robots, but not copy them exactly. You can learn from what others are doing and improve on that, or take it in your own direction!

I think “taking inspiration” is the key phrase. If it means hole-counting and building a replica, I would argue that goes against the spirit of the competition. If it means getting some ideas but then figuring out how to build it yourself, great. The team I coach got inspiration from the Pinhead robot but then spent a lot of time and effort trying to build the intake. Eventually they were able to get the geometry down and make it reliable. And they referenced Chewbotca’s Pinhead 2.0 as “inspiration” in their notebook. But they did not hole-count or make a replica. And then they went and changed some significant pieces. So I feel if teams want to “make a 180 bot”, or a conveyor after seeing them online (or in person at our robotics lab, seeing other teams’ bots), that is fine. Outright copying another team or online bot is not.

I wouldn’t recommend hole counting, (creating an exact copy of the robot), but you may take inspiration. This is actually how many metas have spread in the past seasons.

- Do not outright copy a design
- That you take opportunities to use your own team’s innovative ideas, game strategies, programming, notekeeping, etc.
You can take inspiration from basically anything (So long as you don’t violate instruction bot and purchased bot rules like G2)! In the past I’ve looked into FTC and FRC bots for linear motion mechanism just as a quick example. (Sorry sidetracked a little there) But if someone posts something to YouTube, it’s fair game to inspire things from!
There is no rule prohibiting this, however if you do remember to credit them in your engineering notebook
I would say, just be careful of rule < G4 > which states: robots must represent each teams skill level. I’m paraphrasing from the manual, but it Does say that.
Interviews of robots i.e. Pits and parts, is OK
Pictures or videos of robots are OK
Videos that zoom in on cad, telling you where everything goes and what hole it goes in is NOT OKAY

You are allowed to take inspiration, as long as you don’t exactly copy pieces of or an entire robot. When I take inspiration from other teams, I cad with a type of design in mind, and sometimes look at examples, but never copy other teams or copy them and then change things. This keeps it legal, as long as you credit the team that you took inspiration from in your notebook.

It’s a valid question. The student centered policy is (unfortunately) often treated with varying levels of compliance based on the experience and skill level of the organization, where even in fairly uncompetitive regions teams are told it isn’t a violation to directly holecount a more skilled team as long as they credit them in the notebook (this mentor, who was not mine but was treated as an authority figure by my coach, has been mentoring since the VEX in CT started), and in extremely competitive regions there are bots that teams can buy for an extremely large amount of money (this was discussed in a different topic so I won’t talk about that here). My point is that mentors, at least in my personal experience, are not often good at treating the student centered policy as a rule so much as a vague guideline. It’s natural that someone would post here to ask a question about it, even if the post was relatively low effort. Obviously it is very possible that the op has a great mentor who respects all necessary documents, but this is the most likely scenario.

- tell where you got the idea so you wouldn’t get disqualified
- Put the idea in your notebook
You can copy I think, but just follow the thing I stated. The manual also doesn’t say you can’t copy a robot
