I know there have been some posts about this question, but they are all dated.
Last year, the team that won Excellance award at MS Full Volume worlds (10698D) did not win excellance at their Event Regional Championship. I recall reading that a team must have won an award (Excellance, Innovate…) at their world qualifying event to wih that award at Worlds. However, I cannot find the document with this requirement. In addition to this, a post from a few years ago says you need to submit at least one Online Challenge to qualify for Excellance. can’t find that post, but it was for VRC. Can anyone help me?
Note: To be considered for the Design, Excellence, and Innovate Awards at the VEX Robotics World Championship, teams are required to earn one of the above awards at an event which directly qualifies teams to the VEX Robotics World Championship. Exceptions to this requirement may be made based on geographic circumstances. Other aspects of the VEX Robotics World Championship judging process may differ from this guide due to the scale and complexity of that event.
By one of the above awards it seems like you can win either Design, Excellence, or Innovate and be eligible for all three provided you meet the other criteria at worlds.
Note the difference from the 2019 guide to judging verbiage where is specifies each award separately rather than together:
It states for the Excellence Award:
“To be eligible for the Excellence Award at VEX Worlds, a team must have been awarded the Excellence Award at an event that qualifies teams directly to VEX Worlds during the current competition season.”
and for the Design Award:
“To be eligible for the Design Award at VEX Worlds, a team must have
been awarded the Excellence Award or Design Award at an event that qualifies teams directly to VEX Worlds.”
Next with that, see the attached screenshot where they did in fact win Design Award at their regional championship.
Finally, I found an old Q&A explaining that many years ago Online Challenges were indeed a factor in winning the excellence award at worlds, but that is no longer the case.
Can you say some more on why you think it’s odd? It makes sense to me that if you won excellence before, you may have a good chance to win excellence at Worlds. With the huge number of teams there just doing the teams that have won excellence is a daunting challenge.
I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear. I think only teams that won excellance award at their qualifying event will be eligable for excellacce at worlds. Having teams that won design award at state (or whatever) qualifying for excellance is confusing. It’s fine that they made the change, but why change it when it made more sense?
Hey, this is actually my team that won worlds excellence. To qualify for worlds excellence we had to either win excellence or design at our regional championship. We won design at that event. The design award at that event qualified us for excellence eligibility.
At the event, we had our notebook judged and we were originally considered for design award. Then we got 10th in our division and were in the top 30% for skills which made us eligible for excellence at worlds. We had a total of three interviews to absolutely make sure we were qualified for the award. Excellence award is about an overall great team. And we fit that. May I also ask why you had this question in the first place? Did you go to worlds too but not win any awards?
We are a private team and my mom/coach/financial advisor says worlds is too expensive and we could use the money elseware. I was trying to convince her let us go if we won design, innovate, or excellance at state. I might be getting ahead of myself.
I know we should create a new topic, but here we go quickly.
Sorry, the hear that. I have attended worlds the last 3 years and it is definitely one of my top experiences ever from the AV production to the way matches are run and interactions with teams along with the city of Dallas being awesome. If you ever do want help convincing your coach to go I’m sure some of us can get you some suggestions. It is worth the $1200 as far as high school programs go in my opinion. You can get close at an sig which is cheaper, but worlds is just special.
