- I was not permitted to provide input on the matter
- EP decided that going against the format the lrt software presented would be “unofficial” since the software is created by RECF, despite the fact that it contradicts RECF rules
I would say something, but I know it would be smart of me to just keep my mouth shut here.
In his defense, it should be fair to assume that RECF software follows RECF rules…
- You are always permitted to provide input to Head Referee and EP - Always!
- EP and/or RECF RSM should have escalated the matter about how to handle the software not allowing proper format. Software does NOT dictate proper format of events.
End of the day, the event was run. Not much you can do now, but in future - point 1) and 2) matter.
Oh I was facepalming the RECF software not the EP - hence why I said it would be smart for me not to elaborate, being somewhat involved with somewhat related software.
fair points. It was more of a “advice not sought is advice not taken” thing. He didn’t seem to want to change things, so I didn’t push it, considering I had pushed a lot before and during the event, but still fair points. Unfortunately that will be last my last state championship (as I am graduating) but will keep in mind for future in general
VEX U in the future?
Or mentoring VRC MS or HS teams…?
All can lead to future successes at state - different roles…

interesting
I think that at state/provincials/world qualify events, all elimination rounds should be bo3. For other less competitive events, bo1 is fine.
Ok, looked specifically at Game Manual - <T15> Elimination Matches are a blend of “Best of 1” and “Best of 3”.
Events that qualify teams directly to Worlds need to have Bo3 …
(read specifics about divisions… ). But Bo3 is for finals at World Qualifying Events.
For those of you unaware of why the BO3 vs BO1 discussion exists here’s a quick recap. On April 5 2018 a scheduled game manual update was posted https://link.vex.com/docs/vex-in-the-zone/WorldsUpdate
Without notice RECF decided to change elimination and alliance format 20 days before the In The Zone World Championship event. It was apparently done to speed up elimination matches and fix “bad behavior”. There was no survey of teams to determine how popular such a change would be.
… and it Turns out wildly popular with the EP, not so much the participants, but years have gone by and the old ways have been mostly forgotten except by the olds going “yes, BO3, around the time of young @Tabor473 and just before @Illyana became cool, you know, the ancient times, and it was glorious”. The youngs just look on in confusion.
The EPs sit in the rising starlight, staring off in the middle distance, not thinking of BO1 or BO3 but are pondering the changes they have seen, changes that may come and wondering how to get 22,000 gallons of water into a high school gym.
And RECF’s goal is to make their EPs happy, so we all know that Bo1 is here to stay.
Yes, both @Brad_Lauer and @DanMantz awake in the glorious sun shine, think about what awesome jobs they have how they are making a huge difference in STEM and STEAM programs around the world and then they go “crap, how can I keep @Foster and @lacsap happy today.” Trust me that second part does not happen,. My happiness is ant spit in the size of the total program. I’m just happy I get to play another season.
You just had to ping them, didn’t you? - lol
I was just saying how when deciding between a change that benefits EPs and makes their lives easier, and one that benefits teams and makes their lives more enjoyable, RECF tends to side with their EPs for understandable reasons. Good Event Partners are a scarce resource, and teams that wanna compete regardless of Bo1/3 are not.
It’s simply logical that the RECF would do what they got good feedback from with their EPs, rather than their vocal teams.
It was only fair, I incantated @tabor473 and @Illyana and they arrived. Most of the time people do the incantations to get Brad and Dan here for ugly messes, I did it for the humor factor. They are both really nice people, and sometimes, a fun thread is a way to say “we like you”
And I prefer Mr Foster from roboteers, or just Foster from 17+ adults, will accept Dr Foster from the acidemia but if you are a jerk, then you need to do,the entire Herr Professor Dr Schucker naming.
In case it wasn’t clear to any viewers at home, my original comment was said in jest. I am well aware that the RECF has goals orders of magnitude more important than making Sir Schucker the Almighty Event Partner of Delmarva happy.
And yes, I am well aware of this. I haven’t actually met Dan, but I’ve been working with Brad and he’s a pretty chill fellow.
I am pretty sure I am catching up to you in age at this rate. Pretty sure that is how that works…
Also I am waiting on reviews back for my first paper submission during my PhD ![]()
Some day you might have to call me doctor.
I’d love to do that!
I would just like to see elims at world qualifiers go back to Bo3 and have regional tournaments be Bo1. I get that from an EP standpoint its significantly easier to deal with Bo1 but considering it would only be 1 or 2 (Exlcuding Signature) event(s) of the entire year for each region then it would be nice to see these changes be made so that competitors could just be a tad happier and without really upsetting the EP’s.
@Foster I’m aware you favour the one and done method so I would like your opinion on this change if possible
