Although I agree that constructive criticism is beneficial, there has and, I bet will be, a lot of simply whining about how a person who “deserved” to win lost because of BO1.
Further, based on the number of people that had to be talked to with the last discussion about this, I have a feeling that this is not what is desired from participants. Last time it was asked that this discussion be taken to a pm conversation instead of the open forum.
Finally, if you search “BO1,” a myriad of similar threads already exist.
how did three team alliances work? I was not around for those games so a TLDR would be nice. I see the potential for a team to get carried off that tho
Basically the alliance captain was in the first 2 matches. In the first round of bo3 one alliance partner would be with them, and in the next the other was with them. The third match had any combination of the alliance partners
(It has been a while so that may be a little off)
Each captain did 2 rounds of picks to make a 3 team alliance. In elims, all 3 teams had to play at least once so captain picks who plays which match in a BO3.
Reds have right place robots last so could better choose their ideal pairing fot that match.
Cue accusations of teams throwing matches to be a second pick for a high ranked alliance rather than captain or first pick for a lower ranked one.
Seed 1 picks seed 2 then an hour later they pick seed 17. Then 1 and 2 play and win then 1 and 17 play for a loss and then 1 and 2 play and win. If we were doing 3v3 it would be cool, but it’s not really.
I love 1V1, scoring, scoring, scoring and no destructive defense.
Dude, I “am” the before times, I’ve been here since Hangin’A’Round in 2006-2007. I’ve been here for 15 years, I was doing VEX before all of the middle school roboteers were born.
Ok and lets be very, very strategic in my 24 team event where EVERYBODY plays (*) Not a huge depth of field here, so the #8 alliance is playing matches with a pusher bot.
Need to remember that not all events have > 24 teams. And you need to know that if I can wrangle it, EVERYBODY is in the eliminations. Otherwise, I’d let the top two alliances pick and then do best of 5 (BO5) with them and call it a Saturday.
Not sure who in RECF pushed / decided that 2TA was going to be the thing instead of 3TA, but of all the things, that is my most favorite decision. And it works for me because I still make sure EVERYBODY is in the eliminations. Even in IQ, I line the 23 and 24th place teams and let them play. Everyone gets a shot. And NOT doing BO3 in VRC lets the lower ranked teams get one final chance.
Thanks (now OFF to get my sticky caps LOCK key fixed)
Tenure is relevant because it is quite different actually living through something and experiencing it. Hearing his opinion from the perspective that he has extensive experience with Bo1 versus Bo3 and 3TA versus 2TA is very valuable.
What you’re seeing is mentors with long tenure that have different views of BO3 vs BO1. Suggest listening to those with knowledge and experience. You don’t have to agree with anyone and you’re welcome to voice your own opinions too!
Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. But in this case a full closet full of T-Shirts.
Mom says Taran, don’t touch that it’s hot. Her experience says that. I try to live and teach people to live through other peoples experience. But forge ahead my friend, slap your hand on those glowing coils. And they can be your proof point for the ones that follow you.
This. I’m always listening to people that say smart things. I’ve come around to be willing to do BO3 for semi and finals for World facing events.
Yes back before the 269 motor and 75MHz crystal controlled transmitters, the real before times. Thankful to have dodged that time!
What you’re raising here is akin to an event in NZ we’d call a scrimmage. Not really enough teams to be properly formal, varying states of robot completion and it’s more about participation. Once you hit State champs, and probably the layer(s) below that too I guess, that argument becomes irrelevant and it’s a genuine competition between teams aiming to win. Not everyone will make it to eliminations.
Welp. I would have won states if it was BO1. But I am always glad it is BO3, especially with the very influential auton bonus and the fact that 0.2 seconds in a match scoring/descoring a ball can flip the whole row structure. For LRT worlds, I am hoping for BO3 for Divison Semis, Division Finals, and Grand Finals.
