Building Advice And Tips

Our previous lead builder has graduated and in turn has left me to build a winning robot. I know that basics, such a gearing motors up and down, and spacing metal so that metal doesn’t rub or touch, but I was wondering what kind of tips you guys have for building as to how to make it look less like a box with wheels.
Much appreciated, - A member of team 11865A

CAD

I’ll elaborate ig. CAD makes your designs way more professional than just winging it. Because you actually plan it it becomes much better in the design. You can find, fusion, onshape, and protobot tutorials online.

Screw joint wheels and linkages before this gets flooded with that.

Look at other teams but also try to improve not copy.

Some tips that I’ve found useful are

-Don’t use standoffs to connect the outer channel of the drive train and the inner channel. Instead, use another channel
-Channels that on the one-block side are more rigid vertically than horizontal ones
-Try using 6-motor drivetrains over normal four motor ones (more power)
-Don’t use too many screws or zip ties
-Keep the outsiders of the drivetrain limited to the heads of screws; don’t let shafts or nuts stick out (it helps with driving and prevents your robot from catching on things)

Hope these helped!
