One of the teams at my school(5020D) doesn’t have a robot(180 mech) that is in spec, and we have a competition this Saturday. I was wondering if they can just bring an out of spec robot to a match without them playing the match, so they can get points.

No. When you don’t pass inspection, your team isn’t even on the schedule of matches, so your scenario wouldn’t even exist.
according to the guide. if you do not pass inspection you immediately get disqualified. (in FRC it says you get disqualified from the match idk if it’s the same for VEX IQ)
If they do not pass inspection, they will not receive a match schedule, therefore they wouldn’t be allowed to bring a robot to the field.
What should 5020D do if their robot isn’t in spec? I was telling them to remove some parts, and even if the robot doesn’t work they will earn some points.
That’s pretty much all they can do in this much of a time crunch.
As a last case scenario, they could take everything off of their robot and just use a base bot. Or, they could shorten their mechanisms so that they are still in size. But, what really matters is what direction are they out of size.
Width and maybe length(Probably).

One thing they could do, is attack a small conveyor belt on top of a basebot, if absolutely necessary. They may need to adjust the balancing, but this should allow them to just get the starting pins, which isn’t much, but its better than nothing.
Actually, Once you check in you are on the schedule whether you’ve passed inspection or not. However you cannot compete until inspection is passed. You can bring the robot to the field to keep from getting a no -show. this gives a team an opportunity to correct the issue without missing the entire competition.
There seems to be some misunderstanding in this thread. Once you check in you are in the schedule. Your team will be assigned matches just like everybody else when the schedule is ran. However, you cannot compete in matches with a robot that hasn’t passed inspection. You can come to the field to avoid a no-show until you’ve passed inspection. I guess you could even drop out of the event before schedules are ran if you don’t believe you could fix the problem. I have had teams choose both options at our events. The only way I see to get a disqualification would be to try to compete in a match with a robot that is “out of compliance”. This I know applies to V5 & IQ. I don’t know anything about other competitions.

A schedule is not created until all teams get inspected. If one of them can’t successfully get inspected in time, a schedule is created without them being a part of it. There’s no reason any competition should let an un-inspected robot show up to a match.
Most competition I attend already made the schedule before inspection…
Our organization has hosted over 40 competitions. When an event partner goes through the Tournament Manager Wizard, one of the steps is to create a schedule- long before any teams even arrive. Then once teams arrive and are checked in, you have the option to re-run the schedule in case a team didn’t show or had to cancel for some reason. Inspection does not factor into the schedule in TM, Event Partners may handle it differently at different events. But R3d and GG2 cover this topic (somewhat). As an EP, I will keep a team on the schedule as they try to get their robot in compliance to pass inspection. They also have to bring their robot to the field for any scheduled matches to prevent a “No Show” but cannot compete before passing inspection.
In that case, a schedule should be re-run if a robot isn’t in spec. I definitely know they wouldn’t let any non-inspected robots enter a match, even if they wouldn’t move the entire time.
If your bot is not inspected, you SHOULD not be able to compete, they usually give us a green ziptie if we pass and if you don’t have one you’re not allowed to play a match.
Cool, it’s great to actually get info by someone that has done dozens of events. I’m in the same class, over 100 events…
I seldom run a schedule other than to play with the turn times to make sure that I get the matches. It’s just as easy to print a new one in the morning.
Here is R3 " Robots must pass inspection. The Team’s Robot must pass inspection before being allowed to participate in any Matches. Noncompliance with any Robot design or construction rule will result in removal from Matches or Disqualification of the Robot at an event until the Robot is brought back into compliance, as described in the following subclauses."
So this is where I make a value judgement. Is the team out of compliance by something that be fixed by the first or second match? It is not fair to the other teams to be playing without a partner (or in V5 in a 2-1 situation).
There have been very few times that this has happened, but it does.
