Cheating at Worlds 2021

I guess it should be named “Prediction and Prevention of Cheating at Worlds 2021.”

Yes, because you wouldn’t have to seriously consider preventing a JOKE.

Most people seem to have it innately ingrained into their behavior and opinions that cheating isn’t ok. If someone is so easily swayed by this that they suddenly think it is fine, there are larger issues at hand.

Good point. I’m glad to be surrounded by honest kids making up the few teams left at my school.

Thanks, same to you.

Yes. I don’t think it really needs explaining though lol.

Not based on the title, nor the intended audience the topic is in.

Ah, don’t worry, @lacsap - they are just doing a tabletop exercise to assess potential Remote Worlds vulnerabilities and offer RECF some free virtual pentesting services as @owen169 is saying.

With head refs like @Nathan_Rossi in the room monitoring this topic, I wouldn’t worry about integrity of Live Remote Worlds 2021.

And, also, it is a perfect type of exercise to train our future cyber security experts.

Edit: but I agree with @lacsap that the topic title should read something like “How to Prevent Cheating at Worlds 2021” to better state the intent.

I don’t really think anyone cares…

with the 10 pixels that make up the robot? absolutely not

Pretty callous thinking there. You really think no one cares about how to cheat?

Its a virtual world championship for a 100% swing game lol, there’s not really enough to look forward to for someone to care enough about the various types of cheating.

Definitely some valid points and counter points mentioned here – can’t argue that. I’m sure the RECF also discussed these issues but considering the current situation, the virtual format is more valuable than “RNG” TT worlds. Personally, I think it is too late in the pandemic to complain about compromises. It is more productive to explore potential solutions or improvements.

After giving it some thought, I liked the idea of “verified venues”. These could be locations setup by regional managers where small clusters of field and robot inspections could be done. Once a robot is verified, it must be stored at the venue until the official event.

Just a rough idea. Here’s a list of potential limitations:

  • not enough time to implement this before worlds
  • gathering and travel restrictions
  • volunteer and personnel availability
  • verification system needs integration with existing tournament software

In any case, top performing teams usually come under a lot of scrutiny. They might not get caught during the event, but outstanding performance generally turns a lot of heads - for better or worst.

@lacsap nobody cares that the title is “wrong” (even though its perfectly fine)
Not nobody cares about cheating.
Please actually read what people are saying and T.H.I.N.K. before you post

The point of the title was to clearly talk about cheating. It is also a stand out word choice, which will make more people read this article. The point of the post was to show the possible ways of cheating so vex could address these concerns. I do not think anyone here will use these ideas at worlds 2021 and if they do they are the problem we are trying to address. I certainly don’t plan on using these ideas, which is why I brought it up to the forum.

I also believe giving a group of kids months to think about possible ways to bend or break the rules some pretty incredible ideas will arise. Many of which VEX themselves never thought of. This is why we must show them potential ideas in order for them to create systems to detect these problems.

Topic name == Perception.

Your statement is you do not care - so how does that fit into RECF code of conduct in terms of sportsmanship?

I think everyone needs to pause and think what values you are bring to Worlds? If it is not serious and it is a “joke” to you, are you doing a disservice to teams or your are doing their best to doing their best.

I see absolutely nothing positive with regards to VRC values with a topic whose premise is “Cheating at Worlds 2021” to promoting teams best effort during challenging times. This season has same competition/sportsmanship values as any other, if not more challenging than a traditional season. Yes, that is judgmental - but I value the efforts by all teams putting their best foot forward. Having this effort dismissed as a “lol” is not constructive.

Now it would be beneficial to reframe a thread about how you can design bots and strategies given the challenge limitation would be far more constructive compared to a thread that steer people to “cheating at worlds”.

Why - the OP suggest solutions that yield simplistic rewards in limited situation - while refraining the points of the “cheat” and new approaches will give teams new approaches to thinking about game play and strategy…

So back to OP - better topic names, and for respondents = clarify important points about game play and directions to explore.

(please rename thread as it is against sportsmanship values…)

The idea of the thread is not to help people cheat. It is the exact opposite. We are trying to show the RECF any possible way a team might break the rules so they can put in place a safety measure to ensure the game is fair for all.

Not so much in your original post - intent was never specified and title was click bait.

Do better in the future topics realizing teams will take you at first word and not understand your intend.

Contact your Regional Support Manger, GDC, or other means of raising attention to your points… Better ways to do it vs advocating “Cheating at Worlds” to middle and high school teams. No high road in that.

I listed this at the end of my post saying I wanted to see how VEX would counter act these issues. Also you can infer by my post that I am asking for these problems to be fixed by the RECF. If I was attempting to find ways to cheat I would not post on a page monitored by VEX.

I am a high schooler myself and I believe all the teams reading this understand cheating is bad and against the rules. But this is the easiest way to bring an issue to light. VEX created this platform for people to bring up issues / ask questions.

bro lacsap what are you on about
This is not an issue
The title is perfectly clear enough
Obviously, nobody here is promoting cheating

Furthermore, this thread is not about its own title, can we get back on topic

The title was meant to grab your attention and draw you into the post. There are so many different topics out there I wanted people to read and understand the issues. A title that engages with the reader is important.
