If the âgoofy aah skirtsâ are non-functional decorations then mounting them using nylon screws may be allowed, but as an inspector Iâd want to see a ruling on it. If the skirts are functional, even though they are very pretty and and add an awesome ascetic to the robot, the nylon screws are a no go. Iâd ask that you either replace the screws or remove then completely.

One could easily assume the screws have function, as they are being used to secure plastic pieces to VEX metal (thereby circumventing the ânon-shattering plasticâ rules by making the pieces a ânon-functionalâ decoration). As inspector Iâd not pass your team by virtue of < R26>, < R3>, < R11> and < R12>.
This is b/c the screws are not back by any legal material that provide same function. Simply put the nylon screws are used to hold 2 pieces together, and the legal nylocks are there to tighten them in place. Also if you remove screws the functionality of robot would change.
There are metal plates mounted with steel screws that act functionally as the skirt. There is then a layer of posterboard and a layer of plastic over the metal, attached to the metal with nylon screws. This is the very definition of âbacked by a legal materialâ
What about the screws? They serve function, are not backed by a legal material with the same function, and if removed would âimpact the performance of the robotâ. Sure the entire âskirtsâ are non-functional, but surely this does not protect individual parts from being under scrutiny of < R12>, right?
How? The nice looking skirts will fall off, but those didnât do anything anyways, as they were non-functional decor.
you canât argue that part of non functional decoration is âfunctionalâ in that it keeps itself from falling apart. by that logic the adhesive on a sticker would be âfunctionalâ because without it the sticker would fall off.
You could just use steel screws and nylon nuts. Those are still legal, and youâd probably save the same amount of weight.
Of course, I donât think that this is really about saving weight anymore.
Become ungovernable, use Nylon C channal and tungsten screws.

A screw joint? They tend to be more stable than an axle, itâs a perfectly vaild build strategy.
