The cut in the spot numbers for us was pretty dramatic. North Central Florida for vex IQ for middle school has been in the mid-20s for the past couple years. This year there’s only eight spots allocated. There’s a similar cut in elementary. The MSVRC program for North Central Florida went from 3-4 down to one as well.
Given that it’s about half the size, I thought it’d be half the spots. I know the math kind of gets funny with small regions, because everybody is guaranteed at least one spot regardless of their size.
But it certainly time to reset our expectations in our region. But yikes!!!
In theory the “half” idea makes sense but the math doesn’t always work out that way. As you noted, we have new regions who all will get a spot (at least), growth in existing regions, etc. that would naturally cause the math to change from year to year. Also add in more VIQRC Signature Events this season so more spots are being allocated for those. It’s worth noting that we hold X spots back for each program/age group to award in January for growth, new regions, etc. As a result of all of these factors, the initial allocation has to be pretty conservative to start.
It looks like they are being very conservative with spots for now.
There are only 290 spots allocated for MSIQ out or 420 spots, leaving 130 spots to allocate on Jan 15. There are only 280 spots allocated for ESIQ out or 420 spots, leaving 140 spots.

I was scrolling through the VRC qualifying criteria and I noticed every region that I remembered the spots of had less than last year at this time. My guess is RECF is waiting to hand to hand out more of the spots than usual compared to previous years (which makes sense). Don’t panic until you see the January update.
