Do you really need a intake for ms

So in my region alone I just see a regular claw bot. There is not any intake for it. I am not doing an intake. So do you really need an intake for ms? I understand that you need to pick up the pins and cones that are on the ground, but it has been proven that you don’t need an intake to make it stand up.

TL;DR:

Intakes help teams score faster and more reliably/efficiently.

Long version:
An intake is not cornerstone for an Override bot. Intakes are preferred by higher level teams because they can increase cycle efficiency, which in turn gives you faster scoring. Say for example Bot A is a simple claw bot, but Bot B has an intake in the back made for match loads. When presented with a match load in one of the loaders, Bot B will almost always be faster, since the pin/cup stack will be falling directly into Bot B. Bot A still works - don’t get me wrong, I love a good claw bot, especially for newbies - but it’s slower than Bot B. Bot B will outperform and outscore Bot A in this case, even though they’re handling the same payload. As for the cups and pins on the floor, let’s use the same Bot A/Bot B analogy, except this time Bot B has a floor scraper intake (similar to ones you’d see on Push Back bots closer to Worlds). Bot B will have a much easier time picking up and cycling those fallen pins and cups than Bot A, because Bot A requires a certain maneuver since Bot A does not possess an intake.

You don’t even really need an intake for high school in nearly every region

I mean, not really. though it would prolly be beneficial to run intake since it will most likely be the meta.

I wouldn’t use “the” clawbot but most teams are using a claw locking mechanism and a lift

here is an example of a continous lift

My team specifically is not doing an intake, and our bot will be pretty stable. I recommend a cascade/continuous lift, or if you don’t think you would have enough time (but I highly suggest not using), a regular claw bot. I think you should use a claw instead of intaking cups and pins.

Honestly, match loading is the only need for this year, most teams in hs, let only ms, will not make it through match loads in a regular match. So no intake needed

This is a great question all teams should consider, regardless of grade level.

Can we develop a strategy that relies on only pins scored in autonomous, the first 15-20 seconds of match play, and match loads? If the answer is yes, you can have a simplified no-intake robot.

Think it through. Imagine matches where you have a strong partner, and matches your partner can only play defense.
