Seen today in streets of St Louis:
- It is rude to the host city
- It is rude to the environment to not harvest recyclable materials and just dump it
- It is illegal to have a parking spot in front of a fire hydrant
Come on VEX Nation! Be better!
This seems like putting garbage in a garbage can. How is this rude or disrespectful? Someone wanted to throw it away, they found a bin instead of leaving it somewhere.

Yeah, I agree this was a harsh approach to what happened. But it would have been a better choice of at least finding a large dumpster or asking an official where to dispose of the game parts.
I think another part of this was the poor event setup, they said something about the illegal parking spot, not sure what that meant exactly.
To my knowledge, this is completely respectful of VEX, St. Louis, and the environment:
- Field elements are not reused, he could’ve sold them like other teams do to collectors, but it makes sense to get rid of them.
- VEX really doesn’t care if you resell, throw away, or even burn your old field elements. Not their property as soon as it’s at your doorstep.
- While, yes, a recycling bin could’ve been better, this is completely acceptable. At least he found and used a proper bin instead of leaving it to rot around St. Louis.
- As long as St. Louis (I don’t know their trash protocols) is okay with this type of material in their bins, no biggie.
Also, where did the parking spot point come from? Little random in a picture mainly focused on VEX field elements in a bin…
If you’re so willing to discard your field elements, why don’t you send them to me 
its a public trash bin, its supposed to have trash, and by city standards it is very normal, and hey… better than leaving it lol

So placing used game elements inside a public trash bin — exactly where trash is supposed to go — is now considered “rude to the host city”?
As for “harvesting recyclable materials,” that sounds great in theory, but unless you’re volunteering to personally sort and process mixed, worn competition materials, it’s not exactly a realistic expectation for most teams.
And the “illegal parking spot in front of a fire hydrant” point honestly just adds confusion. Not sure what you are talking about.
I’m all for treating the host city well. However, throwing your trash away in a trash can is legal, acceptable, and ok. Maybe it’d be better to recycle, but this is also perfectly acceptable. I’m confused what a parking spot has to do with filling a trash can.

These bins aren’t designed for garbage like this.
Someone has to go around and take the garbage from these containers. There is no way that the bag in the can will be able to hold all of that, so someone is going to have to rebag these elements. And as I’ve thrown away many elements, they often tear through bags. So this is going to take some additional work for some city worker to handle all this stuff. You need to add that person into the equation.
It’s much better to find a dumpster and throw it all in there. It’s not 10/10 rude, more like 6.5/10.
It’s not exactly rude or harsh, but they could have done a batter job than this. Maybe found a large dumpster - @38053H - or simply gave it to another team who might have wanted it.
What my school does is donate old parts to other schools without a proper vex team, that is probably what I would have done.

I think the last sentence was a bit of a joke.
However, that said, I can kind of understand the problems of putting stuff liek this in a public bin. In New York City, for example, you are not to put household trash in outdoor bins, because of stuff like this.
On another note, it is worth asking whether VEX, in designing games, can start thinking more about recycling of a sort - for example, the newly announced current game might have been able to minimize the use of new parts. As it stands teams end up buying all this stuff that just goes to waste, ulimately. And speaking as a coach of a team that is running into storage issues… well. I get it that VEX has to make some money, but it does get a but nuts sometimes. We still have a stack of all those donuts from High Stakes, and the plastic they are made of is less than good for stuff like landfills.
