they shouldn’t though, I’d just get some metal, a brain, motors, and throw something together instead of a clawbot. I think that mentors a lot of the time just shouldn’t be mentors, they give bad advice. I did robotics in my middle school, and the guy who “mentored” the team literallt said “you’re probably not gonna win, let’s just build a clawbot and see how we do”. And what do you know, we got last place in our tournament (we didn’t have enough money to go to more than one). didn’t even know about the vex forums, if we did we could probably have built a different style of robot. At least right now, I heard about the game and immediately figured out what design I wanted to do, because I’ve looked through videos of robots over the years and have conglomerated ideas in my head. Couldn’t have done that if my teacher didn’t let me know the forums existed, and encouraged me to be creative.

I agree with this, last season (Tipping Point), my mentor forced three of our five teams to build mobys, then they could modify. All he did was break up arguments and make them watch the season reveal video. We started very early so we did not have to do this, and the team that was in 8th grade did not have to do this. Two 6th grade teams and a 7th had to do this. I hope this does not happen again.

  1. When your team’s programmer screams at you for making an “unprogramable” robot
