Drive train vex v5 high stakes

hi i wanted to ask why are people using gear ratios when they can program the speed with programation if you have a blue cartridge and another question what is for you the most optmial ratio for a drivetrain in this year’s game high stakes

Hey there! This is a great question, but, when you adjust the velocity of motors it also affects the amount of power they have, so say you take a 600RPM motor and don’t want to do a gear ratio, you turn the velocity down and the power of the motor also goes down accordingly. If you turn the velocity to 50% the motor will be 50% as powerful as before. As for the most optimal drive ratio, that really depends on the skill level of your driver. Me personally I’m running 66W 600RPM direct drive. My middle school sister team is running 300 RPM because they are a 2nd year team with minimal driving experience. My first year I ran 200RPM on 4 inch wheels, last year I ran 360 3.25 for the first part of the year and then later after my first tournament I ran 450 2.75. Last year at state there were 5 teams that ended up running 600 RPM on 3.25 inch wheels. Only 1 of those robots were driven competitively and the rest of them were driven by people who should have been driving maybe 360 3.25 at max. I hope this helped!

Yes, reducing the speed in the code also reduces power and efficiency. The most optimal drive is really up to you and also based on experience with the drive. Check this out to see which one best suits you: Catalogue of Drive Gearings. A common one this year is 450 RPM on 2.75 inch wheels.

thank’s for your answer and good luck to you to !

oh yes now i understand thanks

f we turn the velocity to 50% shouldn’t the power increase btw we are running a 360 on 4 inches what do you think

You’re very welcome.

Good luck with your drive train!
