Engineering Design Notebook Formats & Examples

Hello!

For any notebookers or VEX people out there, our team is currently thinking of notebooking ideas for this season. Are there a preferred concepts (analysis or notebook pages) or formats that judges prefer? I heard people using Cornell, but I also know that judges don’t get a lot of time to read our notebook either. What are some potential formats that are often used to grasp the information quickly? Are there any tips on a specific font, bolding, or technology that helps? Also, are there any notebook Examples that specify on the decision matrix, analysis, or data collection?

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Hey @Capybara,

The search bar is always there, I recommend looking at some good examples of nbs to start. However, to answer some of your questions directly:

No. It really depends on what works best for your team. Just make sure that there are plenty of relevant visuals and information that accurately documents your edp.

From my own experience (IMO), it really helps to have a title, page number, and date though (correlating with toc). Try to not have a huge block of text. It’s an eyesore. Make sure to make important information easy to be found by highlighting, bolding, etc.

This (again) really depends on your team, but IMO sans serif is better, it’s easier to read and interpret quickly. Like found in studies:

Lastly, good notebook examples are 515R’s (Worlds Design): 515R Spin Up Notebook - VEX V5 General Discussion / VEX Robot Showcase - VEX Forum.

Another one is 8926W (Worlds Excellence): 8926W High Stakes Notebook - VEX Robotics Competition Discussion / VRC - VEX Forum

and 5203G (Worlds Excellence I believe): 5203G gremlin notebook link - VEX Robotics .Competition Discussion - VEX Forum

Most of all, look at the rubric like @kkaidenn said. If you want to know what judges like, the rubric is what they are literally looking for: Judging Resource: Engineering Notebook Rubric – RECF Library

Good luck, and have fun!

A personal notebook that I like to reference on the forum is 1469A's Over Under Notebook and IIWII Notebooking Guide as its a really good example of a functional high quality notebook.
