Example entry of design-notebook

I was wondering if someone had examples, or could point me to a thread that has some good examples of design notebook entries that I could share with my team. I am trying to get my students to pay more attention to the design process, but it is hard because they really don’t know how to document their design process, provide evidence and incorporate true engineering analysis of what they did, even when they are doing it. They hate doing the notebook, and don’t understand how it is important for the planning and design process.
Different examples that cover code, mechanical systems and most importantly strategy discussions would be the most helpful.
The less complex, the better.
Also, if anyone has specific tools they found useful for creating and organizing the notebook, or for creating timelines, plans and general project management would be appreciated.
Thanks

The search button on this forum should help. There are plenty of DENs that have been posted both here and on YouTube. One popular one for reference is 515R’s from SpinUp - 515R Spin Up Notebook

I believe Robokauz won World’s Excellence and have a YouTube going over their notebooking technique.

Hi there. There are good knowledge base articles on this. It also isn’t hard to jump onto YouTube and look at some of the examples generous teams have uploaded.

Alright, this is my first year as my team’s engineering notebooker and team captain, however; I think I’m doing a good job. My advice:

  • Create an acronym for your design process!
    Example:
    C come across the problem
    R research ideas
E establish some solutions from said ideas
    A assemble solutions
    T test and record results
E examine results and evaluate future advancements

Hope this helps!

Part of the design rubric is providing citations for ideas that originate outside sources.

Thanks,
I like organization and detail. Especially on strategy and how it leads to design decisions. Plenty of examples to show my students. I will have them check out what Robokauz has on Youtube.
