I just finished assembling the Mix and Match field, and I have a lot of parts left over. That’s not too unusual except that there is a whole bag of colored pins that aren’t redundant. It’s as if I’ve missed a series of instructions, but I don’t see anywhere where these pins are shown. My guess is that they are meant to be pushed into the field to show where the objects should be placed. But again, that’s not specified in the directions.
They’re for marking where Pins go for Teamwork and Skills (different layout). But we actually bought vinyl colored stickers for Skills so it’s easier to setup for one or the other.

I think they are for pin placement, especially because there are orange capped pins that would serve no other purpose.

Your guess is correct. The bag of orange, red, and blue 0x2 pins is included to give you the option of marking object starting positions.
We’ll consider adding an instruction step in the future to make their purpose more evident.
