Feedback on Live Remote Head to Head Competition

Or maybe we could do it like the Skills USA challenge: Search and Rescue where they have the robot on the field but drive it without looking at the field

What do you mean in the second choice?

I mean completely overhaul the change up game, but using the same field elements. so we can get a game that is designed to be used for skills matches, unlike what we have now which is the very opposite.

So basically a rework with same components?

yes. because it is unrealistic and unreasonable to create and distribute new game elements.

That would be really interesting

I’m just kinda losing interest tbh. This whole year is a mess, everything is a mess. The robotics season is a mess, and I have no idea what to make of these hypothetical changes. It’s hard to keep caring when nothing is consistent and you never really know what’s going on

That’s true but that means there is room to improve in regards to the game

Doesn’t really address my point atm

it definitely is hard to stay motivated when things change so quickly and unexpectedly. I mean atm robot design barely even matters, as long as you can score points at a decent rate.

What do you mean with both of these examples? What is an ‘octobot’, and what is ‘doing everything in 200’?

Ok, so the problem is that we want to play game that is more interactive than skills, but without teams present in the same physical location.

What if we could teleport game objects between the fields?

How about we stop timer after the end of autonomous and then, let say, every 30 seconds and refs do some manipulations of removing or adding balls to or from goals, depending on what happened on the remote fields?

Strictly according to a set of rules programmed into TM.

you might be on to something here!

everyone syncs their fields, that way descoring is possible and robot speed might actually matter. its a way to allow change up to be a swing game again.

there are some logistical problems however, like what happens when robots score more balls in a goal then the goal can actually hold?

I updated the original post.

Ok, that makes sense.

I appreciate the effort and understanding for this of us in areas that cannot meet safely. I am eager to have questions cleared up. Especially about expected numbers and event partner training.

I think some people are really over simplifying the online matches. It’s not just filling up all your goals and then waiting for the match to end. Especially at higher levels of competition, it will be a lot more about moving balls from goal to goal, and will require some good strategy and communication. I do agree that this season would probably benefit from not being a swing game, but I personally think that this online match format is a good idea and is what’s going to make this season viable for a lot of teams.

As someone who didn’t go to the town hall: What is the status of this idea?

  1. Does Remote Head to Head fully replace live compeitions?

  2. Does Remote Head to Head fully replace skills?

  3. Is Remote Head to Head an option for tournaments to use?

If either 1 or 2, it’s bad. If 3, it’s good.

It’s 3- It’s just an option.
Dan did say that this option would even be available for teams who qualified for Worlds but couldn’t travel to still compete

With all the negativity going on here it feels like a political forum.

Just say that an EP has three choices this year, because the school has decided at the last minute that they cannot host in person events. Would you rather they:

  1. Cancel and not play at all
  2. Play remote skills only
  3. Play remote matches and skills

I’m pretty sure after all the effort you have put into your robot
you are choosing this new 3rd option.
