As our team doesn’t have time to rebuild our robot before State, we’re trying to figure out a way to make our current robot faster. Right now, we’re running a 4 motor drive (green cartridges) with the wheels driven straight from the motors. Does anyone have suggestions on ways to gear it up to improve speed?
Make sure that with any questions on gearing you go to the catalog for drive gearing
This should answer what you are asking.
200 rpm straight to 4in wheels is only 41 in/sec (you’re like a turtle). Since you’re only using a 4 motor drive (I would recommend a 6 one), I would recommend 200 rpm geared up 72:48 on 4 in omnis (62.8 in/sec).
Also, since you’re rebuilding, I would recommend switching as many axles to screwjoints as possible. We did it and it and the driver likes it a lot more since it’s more responsive.
Thank you! We would use 6 motor, but we don’t have the time before State as it would require reconfiguring a good bit of our robot and we don’t have enough time between competitions.
Thanks for the tip.
Also does it make a difference with speed whether we use all omnis or not? We currently have omni wheels on front/back and flex wheel as the center since it makes us a bit harder to push.
No, flex wheels don’t make a real difference in speed as long as they are the same diameter as the omni wheels (helps traction a bit though). When I usually say omnis, it just means “wheels”, since they are the most common wheel type I see.
you can run a 333 rpm ratio which is practically the same as 360 on blues, you can achive this ratio with a 60 tooth gear driving a 36 tooth gear to the wheel (assuming you run 3.25 wheels)
Thank you for the suggestion! However we are running 4" wheels so it wouldn’t be compatible with our current drive train.
