(In response to the people that have written to me off site if I’m OK. I’m fine, it’s awesome to know you care)
So in the last few days I’ve posted my dislike for FB. I’ve had notes from Dan and even luminaries like
… drop in with comments.
In a before times meeting RECF / Dan announced that they were changing the size of the VIQ field from 4x8 to 6x8. I’m annoyed because of the aggravation / cost this will be to me. I asked and got told “The World Coaches on FB” wanted this. Fine. Whoever that is, but fine.
And then the wheels came off with Covid. I’m now having discussions about science with people that only source is FB. Drs Karen and Kyle spouting non-stop. And then the election stuff. And the after election stuff followed by the Jan 6 stuff. FB, FB, FB. But hey we get a chance at the vaccine, but the FB posts are against it. And here I sit in August of 2021 about to watch my season die again because Delmarva vacines are at 60%, cases are on the rise, my health care friends are at the ends of their ropes. And the biggest disinformation source is FB.
But I’m committed and start working with teams on getting this new 50% larger field into my teams and it’s not working out. Hard to make it fit in the space. “FB coaches wanted this” echos in my brain. Hard to find a way to stand it up for storage. “FB coaches are a huge demographic” Scramble to find ways to store so we don’t have to spend the first and last 20 minutes of a build session on the field. “We highly value our FB partners”.
So I have non-science people believing in Aunt Karen and her home spun, middle school level science. And now it appears that Coach Karen is part of the echo chamber.
And I called it. As an individual on FB you may be awesome. “A person can be smart, people are dumb and the more people in the group the dumber they get”
And so far, including @Karthik and @DanMantz I have 8 people that live here and in the FB bubble. So while I’m over here in campaign for @DRow for GDC, and doing what I can to help roboteers there is a smaller group with equal clout driving RECF. On a platform that promotes dumbness, echo chambers, etc. because it’s all about the clicks. I can’t think of a place that I’m less likely to take advice from. (Yea, I just don’t have the time / / RECF to be the new bottom)
At this point, I’m going to count noses, cut RECF a check for a few extra and call it. It was well worth the money to find out that there isn’t an overlap and that a majority of the FB people, while well meaning, are really not in it to win it here. You few mentors that are in both and are big participants here have my thanks and admiration.
In the future when RECF says "Our FB partners are behind this, I’m gonna go “The ones that drink bleach or drink cow dewormers or just eat Tide Pods?”
And I’m going to walk away. School starts the Tuesday after Labor Day. I have teams to start, new roboteers to grow. Gonna wear a mask and get weekly tests. And I’ll be praying that I’m not going to a roboteers funeral between now and Worlds. See you on the 7th!
