I’m new to vex this year, and I keep reading that to win the autonomous win point, you need to:
complete four (4) assigned tasks by the end of the Autonomous Period
However, I don’t understand what these tasks are. Am I misunderstanding this?
Please read SC8
An Autonomous Win Point is awarded to any Alliance that ends the Autonomous Period with the following tasks completed, and that has not broken any rules during the Autonomous Period:
- At least three (3) Scored Rings
- A minimum of two (2) Stakes with at least(1) Ring Scored
- Neither Robot contacting / breaking the plane of the Starting Line
- At least one (1) Robot contacting the Ladder
For events which qualify directly to the World Championship (e.g., Event Region Championships and Signature Events), the following tasks must be completed for an Alliance to receive an Autonomous Win Point. The standard criteria above still apply to all other events.
- At least four (4) Scored Rings of the Alliance’s color.
- A minimum of three (3) Stakes on the Alliance’s side of the Autonomous Line with at least one (1) Ring of the Alliance’s color Scored.
- At least one Ring of the Alliance’s color Scored on the Alliance’s Wall Stake.
- Neither Robot contacting / breaking the plane of the Starting Line.
- At least one (1) Robot contacting the Ladder.
When it says neither robot contacting/ breaking the plane of the starting line, does that mean at the end of the autonomous period because the rulebook states you have to start contacting or breaking the plane of the start line at the beginning of the match?
Correct, yes at the END of the autonomous period (when it is scored in its current state) both robot must have moved off of the starting line by not contacting/breaking the plane of it. As you noted we do have to start there per SG1, and the intention of that rule is likely to encourage all teams to come with some sort of autonomous in order to earn the AWP (it is not exactly soluble unless you pull you alliance partner of the starting line as part of your code).
For the part that said at least one robot contacting the ladder, does this mean part of the robot touching the ladder?
In general, the Game Manual will employ two terms for robot and game objects. First, ‘contacting’ means physically touching field element or game object, and ‘breaking the plane’ meaning that physical contact is not required.
Where it gets tricky is ‘robot’ has functional and non-functional components. For example, metal structure in your case touching the ladder would meet the requirement of robot contacting the ladder. However, the robot has non-functional parts - for example, the license plates are considered decorative non-functional part of the robot. So if the only contact with the ladder is the license plate, it would not meet the criteria of the robot contacting the ladder. Yes that has happen in competition (twice) and there is a Q&A about this situation.
