How Important are Rings?

Maybe but I mean scoring on the tall goal also adds a lot of complexity to a robot. I think we’ll see alliance goals get filled up with rings before we see scoring on the tall goal

I agree the alliance goals should probably be filled up first

i know some teams who’s main purpose is mobile goals and everyone seems to think that if they can effectively place mobile goals that is all they need to worry about, but rings, especially later in the season become very important as if you manage to get 2 alliance mogos with 9 points and stack them that is 134 points which is pretty high for a match, the way for the opposing team to beat that they have to place 4 mogos for a total of 160 which itself is hard to do but you can have one teammate work on rings and the other trying to get one neutral goal to your side

also what happens a lot is that many teams all rush to get neutral goals and their alliance goals onto the platform which seems like a good idea, until the other team comes by and knocks it all over and you can’t put it all back on time, if you instead had two filled alliance goals it would make tipping the balance risky

a robot that can do rings well can beat robots who can only do mogos or come close

To me rings on the alliance goal should be worth 5 pts. instead of 3pts. that way if you stack up 9 rings it is worth more than a balanced mobile goal. I think this is a way to make the rings matter more. Right now from what we are seeing (other than California) is just a mad dash to get mobile goals up on the platform and only a couple of rings dropped in the base in auto. JMO

You have to keep in mind it’s still a bit early in the season, so not everyone has fully fleshed out ring designs yet. I’d argue that the low neutral goalposts should see an increase as opposed to the alliance goals, since alliance goals are safe, and there’s no risk involved. I think as we get later in the season, we’ll see more and more ring-focused gameplay since goals are only going to get you so far, especially once you hit the last 30 sec.

Hey, come on @Zulk44 , you all win plenty of hardware with rings worth 3 points!

Although, I think I would enjoy seeing rings on the short neutral mogo branches worth 5 points. It’s feasible to place 8 on a single mogo, which would equal a elevated mogo. It seems like it would be more balanced, since the short branches are a much larger challenge than the alliance mogo branches, which are nice and short and vertical.

Not worried about us, just want to see more teams using rings. Still bummed we were not able to help get 569A qualified for states. But you know our strategy and know what type of teams we are looking to alliance with and rings can outscore just mobile goals if you can at least put 8 rings on both alliance goals and get them up on the platform.

It’s all good, just kidding around! I agree that I wish more teams were attempting ringles, just don’t personally think upping the value is the way to go about it. The rings are already worth a decent sum of points if you get a lot of them, and the mogos are mobile goals after all, their control has to count for something in the game.

It’s been amazing playing tournaments with you guys so far, looking forward to seeing you again!

rings are still coming. It’s possible to hold 2 goals, lift goals, and score rings, all with 6m drive. And once all goals start getting locked down during auton, scoring rings will be the only way to get points during driver control before the last 30 seconds. So not doing it will be missing out on some important points.
