Joining V5 next year

Next year I am planning to do VEX V5. I have been doing VEX IQ for 2 years. Are there any tips for V5?

In V5, make sure to be always updating your robot to make it fit competitive play. My team was new to V5 this year, and this is what kept our robot design process moving. Good luck in V5!

My advice is be unique as possible so you can stand out, don’t be scared to accept failure, read rules, and follow rules. that’s all I can think of

Find a team of the most dedicated people in your area. It is better to have someone put in 40 hours a week and learn along the way than someone put in 5 hours but be a 3rd year. In washington ms i managed to make state semifinals as a soloteam, putting in 30 hours a week. Time commitments is the most important part of finding a good team.

Assume you know nothing.

VEX IQ can develop ideas and habits that do not translate well to V5.

Like, you think you can build a drivetrain in 30 minutes. Nope… It can be really frustrating if you bring IQ expectations to a V5 field.

I would say V5 is a little more competitive - think and brainstorm all you can before you build your final robot (then improvise all you can) - robot rebuilding takes a long time

Ah rebuilding is not that long. 10b pulled of a states 3x wq with a robot they started 2 weeks before states. Otherwise a dedicated team can build a good bot in 1 week

During competitions, make sure to talk to other teams for getting an Alliance partner or to just hang out. Also, being prepared at competitions and showing up for your matches.

No, I think if they should adopt the meta rather then standing out as much as possible (you are able to be innovative even while using the meta).

I wouldn’t aim to adopt the ‘meta’ or be as unique as possible as your main goal. I would instead recommend following the engineering design process as doing so will lead to an effective solution to the game.

Then, while developing a solution to the game, if you notice that a specific feature of your robot is unique and effective, you should document and submit it as your innovation.

I have not done the whole conversion from IQ but i will say that v5 from what ive seen is leagues more complex building wise from iq i saw a bunch of others mentioning that time is a big thing you will not be able to finish youre both in a day you will need to consistenyl put in like 30 to 50 hours if you want to be a high ranking team

Another helpful feature is the search bar! You can look through old topics for answers and solutions to most everything!

Yes per week per teammate. V5 is hard.

Fr. I spend upwards of 47 hours a week, and over over long school breaks it’s much more.

You don’t necessarily have to put in that much to be fairly competitive, you just have to be willing to put in extra time when needed.

It depends on your role in the team

No it doesn’t much (unless you are nb) often people multirole or even have to do all roles :smiling_face_with_tear:

Oh btw IDK if this was unclear but i am a v5 member not IQ

do cool stuff and inevitably holecount china or california :+1:

Just make sure to use build quality and make sure to use a six motor drive (a lot of new teams like to use 4 motor drives).
