I think throwing could be a really good strategy and I couldn’t find anything in the manual saying it’s not allowed so with anything else I would say it’s legal but with respect to S1 stay safe don’t damage the field and G3 use common sense. This is my only my second team so if anyone with more experience than me knows, is it worth asking a Q and A for this? I feel like some referees will understandably not feel very comfortable with students throwing balls across the field, but on the other hand, robots are also throwing the balls around. Additionally, my teams practice area is pretty cramped and would be hard to practice walking around the field.
Thanks!
True, I think this would be good for the QNA.
I’ve been hit in the head by many a soccer ball in my little-league goalie days. Tossing a plush ball 4-5 feet is perfectly safe
Again, try to throw a ball at a goal pretty hard. They hold up well. I don’t think this is a risk.
You’re overthinking this rule. I see no reason that tossing the balls doesn’t fit inside the realm of common sense
Here is my take:
The GDC obviously would have considered the fact that kids might toss the ball to each other. If they did not like the idea, they would have clearly banned it.
Hehe…
Tell that to me and my 5th grade friends…
Take a shot to the face and get your nose broken. No wonder us goalies are a little on the wild side ![]()
But in seriousness, as @Micahy321 already said, tossing a ball isn’t going to hurt, much less injure someone, unless the kid is hard chucking (even then it won’t do much).
Spin up string shooters were WAY more dangerous in my opinion.
As for field damage, I could see a soccer ball breaking field elements, but I doubt kids would intend to, and probably err on the side of caution (or what caution you can have when competing under pressure). If a kid did mis-throw, that’ll probably just be considered a violation (minor or major depending on the situation).
Well, seeing as it’s not illegal, it is legal.
More than anything, you will probably see arguments around ‘bad pass/bad catch’ arguments.
As long as there is no rule against it, it should be legal. Just practice it before using the strategy in competition so that you don’t throw it directly on the field/over a teammate’s head.
