I guess what I mean is, would it be more effective to be able to strafe, but have a slower drive speed with mecanums or not be able to strafe and have a drive 50RPM faster with omnis? For all purposes. Skills, matches, programming, etc.
tbh then it comes down to driver preference. I prefer omnis, but then again I’ve never tried mecanums so I can’t say for sure which is truly “better”
I’ve tried both and personally I prefer mecanums because they suit my driving style much better than omnis (also depending on the game strafing can be a huge advantage). Maybe you can prototype 2 bases and see which one you prefer
50 rpm here is an overstatement. From experience in using mecanums on v5, the difference in speed is definitely not 50 rpm. In fact, on a 200 rpm cartridge, both wheels will travel as closely as possible to 200 rpm. The difference in speed is rather minor.
Sorry, I meant to say if I had Mecanums 1:1 with a 200RPM motor or Omnis 5:4 geared to 250RPM with a 200RPM Motor, which would be more effective. I should’ve been more clear.
For this year, it sort of depends. Would your robot save more time by strafting, or by having 50 extra rpm?
For me I guess, my robot also has a passive cap stacker along with a double-ball catapult, and I am more of an offensive driver. I also tend to have a lot of time to practice driving. So in my situation, I suppose I would rather have the 50 extra RPM. As for the strafing abilities with mecanums, with the amount of driving practice I’m available to, I don’t think the strafing ability is necessary. For other people, it could be a different story though.
