Motors overheating after two minutes

In my class we are doing freeze tag and our robot has a 7;1 gear ratio and our motors burn out after 2 minutes of the 3 minute round
any solutions are welcome thanks

Do you mean 7:1 in the form output:input or input:output (i.e. 7x speed or 7x torque).

If you are running a 7x speed drivetrain, your motors are probably burning out becaude of the torque needed to turn the wheel is too great for the motors.

The 7:1 gear ratio is your problem. A 7:1 reduction on any motor cartridge, and on any type of wheel, is way to slow, and way more taxing to your motors. I recommend a lighter gear ratio, the simplest would be a direct-drive 200rpm on green motors to 4" wheels, but you can refer to this forum post for any other drive gearings.

The 7:1 gear ratio might be the problem. I’m assuming you are gearing for speed, but depending on the weight of your robot your motors will overheat and your robot will actually run slower.

What are the motors doing? Also, when you say 7:1 you mean 1 input tooth per seven output teeth or do you have the gear ratio written backwards and actually mean 7 input : 1 output. That could be really easy to mix up and if you have the gear ratio too fast, it could cause it to overheat faster (depending on what it is doing)

Need picture of the bot and what motor cartridges are used.
