Hi everyone! I just released a model on Printables that I thought I would share, since my team and I find it very useful and I can see other teams finding it very useful, especially during chaotic competitions or when playing matches in quick succession.

This is a dual-sided, multi-color magnetic license plate. It’s meant to be printed in three colors, and a fourth for the holder. The plate uses magnets embedded into the plate to hold it to the plate holder, so when you need to swap your colors for a competition, all you need to do is pull off and flip!

We’ve used this in a few competitions and confirmed that it is entirely V5RC legal. The magnets are strong enough to withstand any hard hits from other robots, so they’ll never fall off of the bot during a match. Feel free to take a look at it, give me suggestions, and use it for your own robot!

The Printables page includes the STL files as well as a fully colored and customized 3MF, so you can just load it into your favorite slicer, change the color settings, customize the team number, and print!

Alas, as Head Referee had to warn teams that lost their plates and left opposing alliance color visible. Make sure NO opposing color plates visible… It is not sufficient for only referee to recognize team color … If opposing alliance is unable to determine robot alliance because license plates fell off - that is on the team that uses that method for mounting official license plates.

One issue that has repeatedly occurring this season is 3d printed plates with weird fonts that confusing team letters.

Of course! The default font in my 3MF is also very clear to read and understand, no funky fonts or other distracting objects, just the team number. As for the plate falling off, of course it’s a use-at-your-own-risk type situation, but if using the appropriate amount of magnets I find this plate to be very strong and unlikely to fall off.
