My son has experience in Vex robotics. Hes upcoming 6th grader and looking for teams in Santa clara. Pls suggest

Vex robotics teams search

Use the map on events.vex.com to see nearby teams (you may need to check last year’s list)

normally I’d also suggest reaching out to your RSM, but with the breakup, I lot sure who the new vex/grsf contacts are to connect you with teams nearby.

hey @aranganv, welcome to the forums!

From what I can tell, Santa Clara is in California (specifically norcal). norcal is one of the most competitive regions in the U.S. That means there should be a lot of options for your son:

SCHOOL TEAMS

My first rec would be to check if your school supports a robotics team. This is generally the most affordable and supportive option for students starting out or looking to continue learning and improving in VEX.

  • Benefits: affordable, supportive, good starting point
  • Drawbacks: less competitive (e.g. if it’s not well-funded), if required applications may be closed for next school yr
PRIVATE ORGANISATIONS

This is a secondary option (i.e., if joining a school team is not a valid option). The environment is similar to a school team’s but may be more competitive.

  • Benefits: more opportunities at school for other activities like sports, asb, music (if the team is an elective), VERY competitive, wonderful community and support
  • Drawbacks: can be very competitive, sometimes pay-to-win :(,
  • Good examples: magikid robotics lab !!
INDEPENDENT TEAM

I personally love this option, did it last year (in socal). It really depends on your son’s experience level and people around him.

  • Benefits: fun; more opportunities at school for other activities like sports, asb, music (if the team is an elective); gains experience also in resource management, finances, etc.; can be highly competitive if your team is nice; just such a great experience

  • Drawbacks: HIGHLY expensive (total expenses can come to $1000+ during one season IF you already have some parts, the field, game elements, etc.), lots of time and effort needed, finding team members can be HARD

more details abt starting independent teams
  1. I want to start by saying you don’t necessarily need a “coach”. If your son is well-experienced and confident, you can register yourself as the “coach” and attend tournaments. u don’t have to teach anything tho, it’s just the presence of an adult is needed
    2. U have to find at least two other team members. If you can’t find well-experienced, dedicated kids, I’d recommend join a priv org or school team. The team really depends on the kids…
    3. PLEASE PLEASE keep in mind the effort needed to sustain a competitive team. Expenses can come upwards of $1000, your son and his team will need to put in a LOT of time after school, and arranging things (travel, scrims, etc.) can be hard

If you have any other questions, feel free to LMK! Best of luck to your son this season :)!

maybe search ruiguan or magickid.
