New and Improved Lift Design!!!

It is still a form of four bar. You have just made it go vertical and horizontal. Double four bars will be more common this year than they have been in the past but due to their thickness and potential for slack I don’t think they will be as successful as some other lifts.

Eliwu is right, there are ways to make them work with metal rather than gears in the center, cutting slack.

I built one of these for Bridge Battle in 2008-09 (including the driven gearing).

Andrew had one (yes including the gearing) for Gateway.

As it just so happens, I do think this is a valid design this year. It came up yesterday as Camaron and I discussed Skyrise designs.

The problem here is not you suggesting the design, in fact I applaud you for realizing that this design is useful this year and sharing it. The problem is you’re trying to mark it, or claim it as if it’s your own invention, patent pending when in reality this design has probably been around for I’d guess literally thousands of years. I’m guessing hundreds of VEX and FRC teams have built and used such a lift.

In short YOU WERE NOT FIRST HERE.

However being a reddit user has it’s advantages, one of them is seeing a fair amount of memes, this one happens to apply here…

I understand you guys probably did innovate on the four-bar yourself, as I did in 2008. But this is you following in the steps of others, you’re walking through engineering history, you haven’t reached the point where you are doing anything particularly new.

It’s good to think, to innovate, to learn. But you can’t go bragging about how you invented the wheel 5,514 years after it was invented.

That’s why people are angry at you.

You’re on a good path, don’t take this the wrong way, back off the name, don’t try to claim this as your own, just use it, develop it, perfect it and ultimately use it to play Skyrise (if that’s the way your team wishes to go, there are certainly other ways to go at this point).

I recall that this specific bar design has no specific name. I am suggesting the name of Danny Lift to honor a past member of our team who helped start vex at our school, and has now graduated. Its like the tabor hang of last year, many people had that idea, but tabor put it together, perfected it, and posted, making it available to the masses. What I aim to do here is that, honor a brilliant team member, and provide everyone with an alternative to the other 3 common lifts. I want everyone to have access to brilliant designs, not just a select few.

on a side note, this design does raise the lowest point possible, However I was able to effectively use this in toss up and will continue to use it this year.

Still a 4 bar with a slightly modified mount to allow for 100% vertical position. Also mounting the motors on the middle is not innovation, as a 4 bar lift does not specify where it is being powered from. It is just that most people power it from the bottom, as it is more efficient to have the motors and gears’ weight on a static position. Mid mounted motors add weight to the arm. Also the twisted shafts will no longer occur with the new high strength .25in shafts from the VEX store. This will solve the high torque problems. BTW it is more efficient to have the gears mounted directly to the arm rather than transferring all the torque through a flimsy thin shaft.

my question about this design is how high will it go from what I can see it will only reach about ~38 inches which maybe gets you to the medium post, or can you alter the middle section to give more height?

This could go really well on top of a two stage scissor.

That is correct, it’s called a hybrid-boom lift and it’s used on elevated platforms.

I think it should be called a Danny lift anyway because hybrid-boom is just to boring. Besides, Ruiqi didn’t invent the wheel nor tabor invent the hang and New Zeeland didn’t invent the double side roller LOL

Apart from tabor, I’ve never seen anyone insist on naming their own creation after themselves (yes I know you’re not Danny, but it’s the same thing). If the name “Danny lift” catches on, then let it be. But for now, I’m going to continue to call it a double reverse four bar.

Sorry to be frank, but what you’re trying to accomplish feels a bit vain.

Also, “Danny lift” tells even less about what the lift is. Jus’ saying’ :wink:

Hello, this is Danny, the one the lift is named after. I’m not a huge fan of forums but since the thread got somewhat popular I thought I’d make an account to explain some things and help anyone if they would like. :slight_smile:

So Max-D was correct, I based my design off of the boom lift that you might find on a construction site or fixing power lines, in fact I have a picture I made to put into my engineering notebook that showed this. (it was an early version)

Lastly I’d like to say I don’t really care what its called, although having my name connected to it sounds kinda cool :stuck_out_tongue: and again Max-D had a similar train of thought to what our teams had at our school. After making the lift and as we tested it and improved the versions we didn’t want to call it a reverse 4 bar blah blah blah (no offence if you like properly naming things haha) so we just called it the Danny lift because I was the one who created it and used it at our school.

Hopefully this clears up some issues and more talks about actual designing and improvements to robotics/ vex can occur rather than the name of this lift being the problem and where all the attention is at.

Thanks for digging out this old thread.
When I first saw this thread, my initial thinking was to look for this old thread too - to show that it is really not a new lift.

A bit of background, 8059 did this lift for the gateway Worlds.
Simply because almost everybody was using the usual 6-bar. The team decided to do something difference (and better) - so they decided on this reverse double 4-bar.

The motors were mounted at the centre joint instead of the usual lower joint.
This allowed the lift to do quicker than the usual 6-bar.

The result was pretty good too. We earned a “Good robot” comment from Karthik at the practice field and went on to achieve a 7-3-0 result (ranked 18) in the Engineering Division. Picked by the 1st seed but eventually lost to the amazing 2W (World Champ) at the semi.

Just one warning - reverse double 4-bar is technically very challenging, especially if you choose to (like us) mount the motors at the upper joint.

I am slightly confused as to where the elevator is driven from. It is not similar to the double inverted fourbar so is it driven from the middle gear block.
