It’s definitely not the most intuitive thing to describe over text, so we can chalk some of the blame my way, don’t worry! Glad to see you’ve got it figured out. Once you start playing with them physically, its easier to figure out the intricacies of the clocked bore.

Or it could have done if the offset of the hex bore was another 10 or 10.5 degrees off.

I see what you’re saying. Maybe we can explore this as a running change on the insert down the road… :thinking: :man_shrugging:

Just realized i missed one of the questions i meant to answer!

We’re working on FINALLY updating the 4" Mecanums wheels to match the updated colorway of Black/Grey for all V5 wheels. Hopefully these will be back soon, but I don’t have a good timeline on restock yet.

Missing a chance here to make them with colors on the plastic wheel. (Lamenting the loss of colors in the VEXIQ line)

Unless I’ve missed an update, Wheel Legs are still legal for VRC. They are listed on the discontinued but legal page for V5.

I’ve never had a kid use them on a serious robot, but they do occasionally get swapped in for a test drive in my engineering class. I only have one set that I found on eBay though, so I 3D print versions that work fairly well.

I think that people are sleeping on the new mecanum wheels, the concept of mecanum wheels giving the advantages of normal wheel while allowing strafing has always been interesting, but never practical due to the inefficiencies of the current designs. Maybe not for this year but or future seasons i think there is alot of potential for mecanum drive trains assumin these wheels can fix the problems with the older design

My response to Bailey had do with VIQ, where they were never legal. But they are seriously cool looking on a 10x12" robot. Gives the robot that weird bug look, and because the field on IQ is plastic it “skitters” around. (And now I’m wondering if the legs could climb over the supply zone wall/tubes playing Full Volume)

Last time I saw one in use in VRC was Nothing But Net. Team cut the other three legs off and used the single leg like a mallet to launch the ball into the net. It was pretty accurate.

So, anyone tried to get the current VEXIQ Omni into the Full Volume supply zone, under the 2.6" rail? :joy:
Seems a 2" omni would work fine for that task, complimenting solid drive wheels in the back…
Bumpy ride would only help sort the 60 blocks into order for dumping.

I asked the product designer who worked on the 2" Omni Wheel to spin up a little graphic to help show some of the intricacies/secrets of the wheel. Basically, this graphic should help anyone else come to the conclusions @u89djt & I did above, albeit much easier. It’s relatively quick and dirty, but gets the point across better than any of my textual ranting has been able to. He even tossed in a trick that hasn’t discussed here yet - cutting the inserts to help create even more clocking positions! If you make two quick trims to the included inserts, you can quickly achieve the same 15degree clocking ability that is exhibited when these wheels are used on the 1/2" Hex Bore.

These inserts were cut using pretty standard diagonal cutters. Be careful & use safety glasses! The cut-off from our inserts went FLYING!

Oh hey, I have a dremel and an attitude - we could make 60 degrees happen if /really/ necessary :slight_smile:

Depending on the specific material, doing it with a cutoff wheel on a dremel or similar could be less ballistic because the plastic gets out of the way in a slower, more controlled manner. I guess it’s too small to use twisted duct tape as a tether to stop it flying.

Would cutting the inserts four times to have an entirely hexagonal flange weaken them too much? Wouldn’t have to worry about pairing them up then. Very fiddly operation. You could 3D print a jig to hold everything straight. People seem to be frantically eager to print things :smiley:

I will. After all, safety is one of my top 3 priories.

Ah, with four cuts, the inserts would no longer have a lip to locate them specifically along the shaft within the cavity, and the pair don’t quite meet in the middle. A continuous column of the omnis would place themselves though and there’s only a millimetre of gap. Eminently hackable!
