New team help needed

Please quote what section of the game manual makes you think this.

I don’t know, just something I remember being asked at a drivers meeting. Though now that I think about it it might have been can I drive for one team and work on another

ya thats probs what ur thinking of. The game manual states that one person cannot be on the drive team for two separate teams

We’re not talking about being on 2 teams. Just mentoring a new team i.e. to answer questions etc.

I don’t know of anything in the game manual that says you can’t be involved in more than one team.

The only rules about being part of multiple teams are:

  1. You can’t be a drive team member for more than one team during a season (with a few exceptions, stated below).
  2. A maximum of one student per team can serve as a drive team member or programmer for a different team at States and/or Worlds.

(I also assume that a student who changes schools or moves far away from their old team might be able to be a drive team member for another team in their new location, which is how it was last year, although you may have to check with the RECF.)

If you do well with the stuff you buy, you may be able to get a good sponsorship, but even as a new team, many companies (especially tech companies) will be willing to sponsor you.

We had a total of 5 sponsors for 6 teams last year with all the upgrading and stuff we did, so a sponsor or two will certainly cover it.

Is it required to do outreach and have sponsors in VRC?

Whats outreach and vrc?

Not required at all. It helps to have outreach and sponsors to help pay for the cost of the robot and basically allows you to be more frivolous with money and parts.

Google says:
Outreach is an activity of providing services to any populations who might not otherwise have access to those services.

For example members of a VRC team might mentor or start VEX IQ teams.

VRC stands for Vex Robotics Competition.

Well in that case I agree with qwerty2

So VRC is basically building and programming the robot and completing the challenges. Besides that completing the engineering notebook. Am I missing anything?

Nothing i can think of. That should be enough to get you started and on the right track.

Idk what I thought outreach was. However, it still helps and can make you better known and respected in the community. Since are a new team, I would hold off for a season or two to build up knowledge and experience.

Hi all, I have 5 kids signed up in the team with a total of $1500 available. With this I can get registration $150, the basic competition robot kit for $900 and the basic field kit for $500.

I may need 4 extra motors $140 ($35 each)
Registration for at least 2 tournaments $200 ($100 each)
Tshirts $100 (5 kids)

So totally I need about $500 more. Is this correct or am I missing anything? No luck with getting sponsors.

I would think you need at least the foam tile portion of the field itself, even if you choose not to go with the walls. You can get off-brand ones cheaper and they should be good enough; in prior years, we’ve always used off-brand tiles & also for 2 years used a wood field perimeter that cost maybe $100 to build and was INSANELY more sturdy than the actual field perimeter or the cheapo PVC version.

Shirts aren’t necessary enough to put them above a budget for additional parts, IMHO. I’d recommend putting aside at least $300 towards “misc parts and electronics”. At a minimum, I would be leaning towards getting at least 1 additional battery with charger, some additional aluminum pieces (because they WILL someday end up accidentally cutting the very last aluminum x-hole C-channel you need to the wrong length… lol), and you may need more nuts / screws / bearing flats / shafts / etc that you can end up going through fast or losing. Also, I’d want to get some sensors for them to start learning how to use to help advance their programming capabilities (that could wait until next season).

BTW, do you already have the necessary tools for dealing with cutting, drilling, etc? If not, you may need to budget something for that.

Additional thoughts after looking at our PY budget:

  • Safety glasses for all team members
  • Cables & cable cutter & cable ends (not sure if that comes with your robot kit? You’ll want the ability to cut & make your own, though!)
  • Competitions seem more expensive this year in my area; some are definitely over $100. Also, save money up to get them to States / Regionals so that if they get a chance they can go!
  • If you get a dremel for cutting, we have sometimes gone through lots of replacement discs (depending on who is cutting)
  • Not sure of your area, but likely all Vex purchases will have tax & shipping costs that may add a significant amount to the overall price

You dont need tshirts but they do look cool (sometimes)

Definitely! If you have the budget, I totally recommend cool t-shirts - I just wouldn’t put that above, for instance, a 2nd battery.
