Part Organization

This is a forum to discuss how to keep parts organized.

Get plastic boxes from dollar tree. Big ones or long ones depending on piece shape. Then sort it. You can split beams by 1x or 2x. Don’t sort by color. Sort by piece. Gears go in one box or if you have a lot then split by gear types bevel, hybrid and others. Then you label the boxes and keep them on a shelf or wherever you want it. Put sensors away from other parts, and keep controllers and motors seperate.

I found these great 3d printed Beam Organizers on MakerWorld. They fit a lot of beams both double and single wide. https://makerworld.com/en/collections/23514012-vex-iq

I use the fishing lure boxes from Plano. They have a few different configurations in the 3700 style boxes, including one that has a single compartment. I can put all of the parts into a stack of 10 of these, then all 10 go into a rolling suitcase.

Cabela / Bass Pro has there in-house version that are the same size. I used to be a fan of the ones from Harbor Freight, but after awhile the latch tabs tear off. The Plano / Cabela ones have a separate latch and so far I haven’t broken any.

All in all my robot lab has about 50 of these in stacks. Some are by color (all orange) some are by kind (2x ). depending on how many I have.

@RobotGuru you should do a search, lots of great ideas from the past.
