The judges deliberated over night and the decision is
@3apples was the winner with string bean. The design is great, the construction is well done and it works since they actually built it. (I’ve used CAD to design things that at the end of the day just don’t work, but the drawings look very cool). It also made me smile that it was scraping the bottom of the parts bin to find usable parts.
@10673, with their Heart of Gold Mk II robot is second. I love that there is a lot of complexity there, but is still using 1x beams. I do wonder how it will do with the catapult and the light nature, will momentum not be it’s friend?
@RoboticsIsFun is the third place winner, but it is the robot that I’m going to build. It looks like it would be approachable for a novice builder to construct since it has a much simpler design. The simple block setup to make it work really helps.
was the original plan, but with the close nature of the two CAD designs, I’m going to bump the third place prize to $75. If the three of you can contact me at foster at S T E M R O B O T I C S dot org, we can work out how to get you the parts.
Thank all of you very much for your time and designs, you’ve inspired me to start pushing teams to build differently. An hopefully you’ve inspired other roboteers to not automatically reach for the 12x12 plates.
