Spin up turrets?

Hm. Although i do think torque is needed, I prefer for it to be in 4 motor tank drive instead of an X drive. While X drive is the best drive train for a turret design by itself, I don’t think on the field that it will be that important, mainly do to an extreme imbalance of speed and torque. 100 RPM is too little from what I can tell, since the opposing teams will jsut drive away and you can’t exactly cut them off or anything like that. I know I will have a hitman after me for saying this BUT mechanum drive is probably an ok solution if you want strafing. I have never used mechanum though, so no promises.

How about making an x-drive that can intake on every side and that is programmed to always face the goal? Then you’d only have to deal with intaking on all sides, not loading a turret from all sides, plus you would be able to get discs more easily.

Please build that. I would love to see it in action. However I don’t think that would be very realistic or practical

Since the automatic turning mechanism would have to be using at least two wheels at all times, it would limit your ability to drive the robot around. A possible solution to this is having the automatic turning mechanism use wheels separate from the main driving mechanism.

No, that will be way too slow (about the speed of a 115 rpm standard tank on 4" wheels). But 200 rpm inserts will work great on a 3.25" wheel x-drive

That seems much less practical. Taking away motors, programming, etc, just in design it doesn’t really work. To have four intakes simulateanously spin on four different sides of the robot just wouldn’t work, especially since you inevitably DO have to load the disc into the turret. I guess you could design a system where a pnumeatic piston pushes the disc up, but I honestly just don’t see it happening.

If FTC teams were able to get dual intakes working for Ulitimate goal and if VRC teams were able to get a 3-way intake working for Nothing But Net, then I have no doubt that a quad intake is possible for Spin Up. Will it be hard? sure. But would it be worth it? I guess only rigorous testing + competition experience will tell.

So if I were to try and do a 4 intake bot, it would be:
4m drivebase
1m turret feeder
1m flywheel
And 2m shared over 4 intakes somehow

It’s a feasible bot plan, however there’s still a few issues.

If going for an intake on all sides, you need there to be an opening for the discs to go through, so there’s less support for the drivebase, making it more likely to twist (I assume so)

Also you need somewhere for the wheels to go. Having an intake on all sides doesn’t automatically mean you can intake from every direction, with wheels at the corners, you can’t intake from the corners. So if you want to intake a disc thats positioned in such a way that a wheel would drive over it, you would have to do extra manouvering to go around and pick up that disc, which kind of defeats the whole purpose, as it makes that shooting cycle longer again.

Also loading would be an issue (been trying to think of a solution to that for my actual bot plan lol), as the discs are intaked from all directions, how do you push the discs up into the shooting mechanism (the turret feeder doesn’t exactly work for this, the idea I have is a separate belt with flaps that feeds discs into a flywheel, that doesn’t help loading discs)

I still think a turret is better than trying to figure out something with a fixed shooter

I ended up changing to four motor drive, on mechanum wheels, with an adhustable hood.

I disagree, using a turntable, making a turret is perfectly viable, with out making custom parts.

Are you sure? Has anyone built a functional and competitive turret for spin up?
I’m still on the fence about turrets, I don’t think that they will be competitive enough to make them worth the effort.

Since that poll asking people if they’re building a turret got 48+ yeses I believe, yes I’m pretty sure. Maybe later on people will turn back, but there’s definitely a huge population fo teams doing it

Let’s suppose you only use a 4 motor drive train, You need to use at least 1 motor for the roller and 1 motor for the intake and usually 2 motors for the flywheel. How will it even be possible for you to have enough motors for creating a rotating turret? A spinning turret needs at least 2 motors to be powers, I’m sure it’s not possible to get the roller, intake, flywheel done in only 2 motors

You could also power the roller and intake with 1 motor. The Purdue Sigbot thing had a 6 motor drive, which basically proves that it is possible.

yes but their 3d printed disk weigh half the weight of the actual vex disc.

But there’s no benefits of doing that, a single motor won’t be able to create a strong flywheel launcher to launch across big half of the field
