I love how you are referring to your current robot design as a stupid building mistake.

Our first robot was actually worse than the second because on the first it was us bunch of sixth graders (who barely knew what vex was) slapping metal together and calling it a robot.
Using keps nuts. We did that for the first year, and have never done it ever since.
We also make sure to use high strength gears instead of low strength. We also made sure to put rubber bands on our DR4B . . . unlike our first year.

But, what’s more of an abomination is all of the red on the controller.
Critiques, if this is a serious robot being built:
The wiring realllly needs to be improved, they can easily get stuck between the gears and that would be no bueno. You should potentially work on the way the wheels are cantilivered too, as I think the front wheels are bending up (Or… Just don’t cantilever at all). The claw isn’t even straight, so I would advise getting it straightened just so it doesn’t become lopsided with the center of mass.

Yep that is the reason it is an abomination it is a clawbot built by a class of people with no vex experience that me(a person with roborics experience) modded it is absolutely kewl

Turns out that this type of arm doesn’t work particularly well. We had to use one driver for the base and one for the arm. Luckily I knew my copilot very well. Also turns out that big knobby traction tires were great for platform climbing but… not so much turning. when the front were swapped for omni’s they were different diameters… It was a mess. But it was fun.
Well, keps nuts are wayyy easier to put in and take out when you only have crappy hand tools. We use nylocks for any nut that comes off, but the speed that I can put in a keps nut is worth losing them ever once in a while. You just have to tighten them a lot.
I love how you went so far as to block out the reflection of the plate on the platform. 
We came first so 448x is off brand 224x
