During the Gateway season in 2012, VRC team 2W, from the Gladstone Robosavages in British Columbia, Canada, broke the VRC game like few other teams before or since, and won a big red trophy as World Champions.
Some good friends of mine played against them in the Division Finals, and the coach I currently work with was their coach back then.
We were all excited to see those matches play out. That robot was insanely good.
And the uniqueness of it points to why Gateway was so good.
Think one of my teams (which btw, could possibly be the 1st rd4b in worlds) lost to 2W in the Division SF.
But this 2W was a monster… they broke the game so much that GDC has to change the rules after them 
The 1st ever wallbot and capbot… I am still amaze with how they managed to pack everything into 18x18x18.
Really unique design!
I guess I just wasn’t around back then, what was so game breaking about this robot? Are there videos of it on youtube in clearer resolution than the world finals matches?

They basically capped the center 30in goal and only let their alliance use that goal. Control over an entire 30in goal in Gateway would swing a match heavily in your favor.
It was the 1st wallbot in Vex… and it capped the centre goal as well.
Gateway was also the season where almost all the teams in the world was trying to do a NZ-bot… or the 6-bar lift.
And there was a lot of meta gaming going on… eg. When should we open the gate, when should we put in the negator or doubler, etc…
So this idea of wallbot and capping the goal was almost like unthinkable.
And gdc added in the no latching rule into the game after this robot.
It was 2012, so no HD mobile phone cameras. The videos available were probably all shot on tape.
Siri was newish in 2012…

So they totally blocked off a good part of the field and secured a good number of points for their alliance as well.

It was very brave as well.
They practically gave up their scoring ability just to become a wallbot.
