According to our estimates for 5" flywheel that would require ~ 30:1 total gearing. Since each axle introduces friction, you want to reduce total number of axles. Both speed and turbo motors could be setup with just three axles and require ~19:1 (speed) and 12.5:1 (turbo) external gear ratio. I think turbo is a better choice, since smaller torques will flow through the system.

We had an 8:1 and 32:1 (1.6:1 internal, 5:1 external, 4:1 from one flywheel to the other) gear ratio originally, but the balls were only shooting half court. So reducing friction would help get those shots full field?
