The size of IQ WORLDS

MS is 303/304 and elementary is 270 out of 280. If they are going to get this teamwork done in a day and a half they are going to have to have a few divisions! The action will be everywhere!!!

I can’t wait! This is going to be fun!

4 divisions each

Can you explain the divisions to me? This will be our first time at Worlds and I’d like to have an idea of what to expect! We’d be in MS. Also, any ideas on how many matches each team is likely to have overall?

They normally plan 10 matches per team. The divisions will pretty much be separate qualifying tournaments, followed by the top team from all divisions going into the finals.

They will divide the teams into 4 divisions by going down the list and assigning each team to the next division. If they have teams 1 through 100, then 1, 5, 9, 13, … will all be in the first division. If you have multiple teams they will not be in the same division unless you are bring at least 5!

The computer will keep track of the highest scores across the entire tournament. When they make the finals they will make one list of all of the teams and select the top few from there.

They can get a lot more matches in this way, as they will have 4 fields running at once. This is really the only way to get it all done in two days.

That’s how they did it last year for VEX IQ when there were two divisions, but it looks like they are going to do it differently this year. The agenda Tuesday shows “Division Finals” from 3:30 to 4:30, and then “Finals” starting at 5:00. With around 300 teams in ES and MS each, that seems like a good choice to me.

OH! I see that now! I wonder if they are going to do a round robin kind of like in VRC?

Thanks - I appreciate the information. We’re super excited to be going this year!

If each team has 10 matches, do you know if they will follow the same rule as most regional/state events do? for every 4 runs, the worst score will be dropped. So of the 10 matches, only 8 will be kept for the final scoring. thanks!

Yes. They will follow the same rules regarding dropping low scores every 4 matches.
