V5 Motor curve

On the V5 brain where you get to see the devices torque/rpm/power draw etc there’s a graph in the box labeled torque, and it shows the motor curve. This graph, if I understand it correctly, shows that the motor will have a higher torque if it moves at a lower RPM. Also, this graph + the vex website says that the torque of a 200 RPM V5 motor is maximum of 2.1 Nm. This means, according to the graph, that at 50% max speed (100 RPM) a 200 RPM v5 motor has a torque of 2.1 Nm and that at 100% speed, it will have a torque of around 1 Nm.

If this applies to 100 RPM motors, then a 100 RPM motor going at 100% RPM has a torque of 2.1 Nm and if it goes at 50% RPM then it will have a torque of 4.2 Nm. Therefore, having a 200 RPM move at 100 RPM will have the same torque as a 100 RPM moving at 100 RPM.

Is this logic correct?

Max torque for a motor with 36:1 gears (100rpm) is 2.1Nm, torque for 18:1 gears is half that.

you can select the correct gears by touching the top left gear setting in the motor dashboard. It will be set automatically if you are running a user program.

Oh… well that explains why the graph was showing 1.1 nm on load. People said the v5 motors were 2.5x more powerful so i assumed the 2.1 nm on the website was meant for the 200 rpm motors.

Old 393 motor is 3.93W
New V5 motor is 11W
That’s where the approximately 2.5x comes from.

Also, don’t just look at the stall torque. V5 motors don’t look nearly as good if you look at stall torque alone. Look at how the torque doesn’t just die off right away as speed goes up. The peak power is at roughly 60 rpm with the red (100 rpm) internal gears. Those 11 W will give about 1.75 Nm at 60 rpm. Try doing that with a 393. The 393 will give you about 0.625 Nm at 60 rpm (assuming 60 rpm is also where its peak efficiency is).

If all you care about is stall torque, then no, the V5’s are not nearly so much better than the 393s. In most circumstances I try to have people running their motors well away from the stall torque. So I have my students target the vicinity of peak power. There the V5 motor provides about 2.8 times the torque of the 393, or about 1.8 times more torque than the 393.
