Its easier for students to code from home and also someone might stumble upon it and want to join the competition (obviously make the leaderboard open only for registered teams)

I am confused - are you saying you are a competition team and your coach is not sharing the key for VEXcode VR Playground available for current season to your team?
This may be an educating coaches about the value of making sure team members have access to the key.
Reading this a little further - VEX is a business, and they do give access to a lot of other playgrounds for free. Adults are the ones who register teams for competition season, I am not sure how virtual robot would convince adult to register team for season.
I do not see the value proposition here - competition playground is a value to engage registered teams to learn more about game once they have registered.
