Vex V5 Remote Controller Alternatives

Is it possible to use your smartphone to control your vex v5 just like the v5 remote?

Yes, you can control a VEX V5 robot with your smartphone, but it will take a lot of extra work. You’ll need to find/create an app, involving advanced coding, and a way to connect (like Bluetooth or USB). It’s not as simple as using the V5 remote, and will most likely introduce tons of lag. Not to mention the legality (Illegal in tournament)

In one of my other posts, where I asked how I can intercept requests to see how VEX worked, Jpearman notified me that the documentation is proprietary, not open-source, and thus attempting to crack the code is potentially illegal (in real life, not just tournament).

You probably shouldn’t even try to create an app for your smartphone. Unless you partner with VEX somehow… :man_shrugging:

true, but i believe that it would be alright (in theory) if you made it private, or did not attempt to profit off of it.

Nah. I’m old. I want to build a stepping stool that carries my toolbag and follows me around the workroom floor. I figured VEX looked pretty legit. I’m piecing together a home study course. I was hoping the V5 might get me a little closer to some seriously autonomous robutt action. Instead, I’m going to build a little toy to chase the cats and drag a magnet around the carpets so my wife isn’t stepping on tiny nuts and bolts all the time.

Just noobin’ it up over here!

You could use V5, but for hobby use it’s generally not the most cost effective solution.

Too late now. Besides, it’s still cheaper than another motorcycle and doesn’t terrify my partner nearly as much. Not like Lego has a “my first factory job conveyor belt” playset. Also, it looks like there are some fairly comprehensive teaching guides available and a lot more resources than the hobby robutts. One can only assemble a given number of line tracker bots.

In this case, i don’t think that a controller would be necessary. Have you looked into making it fully code driven (Autonomous)? Although expensive, vex offers a lot of different sensor options; such as ai, vision, buttons, switches, and even axle trackers. this seems like the best route if you are looking for a hobby to soak up some time.

Yeah, I didn’t think I was getting a remote controlled toy, but I didn’t want to end up in another Meccano situation where proprietary code makes the hardware useless once the toy is unsupported.

Super excited to get into the curriculum. I already know I want to learn Python. I cleared my desk and I’m just getting into the first Squarebot build. Any chance you know a resource for cheat plans? I wanted to do quad motors with treads. (Got some shaggy carpets.)

hey, sorry for the late reply, as far as the build base, i would look into the vex v5 hero bot. they provide lego like instructions. Do you plan on 3d printing the tires, or purchasing the 4" rubber traction ones from vex? on a second not, i would much more recommend using the coding language c++ or c#. Much more easy to learn, and more commonly used in the professional setting (Software development) anyways, Good Luck man

Well, I see what you meant about the cost, but I am enjoying the process and there’s more than enough information to keep me learning. Feeling like I barely scratched the surface. Besides the brain and 20amp batteries is there anything else I should pick up to start working toward autonomy?
