What bot designs do you see used for the new game?

I see like the s bot flaps but a half c cut into each flap for the scoring objects. (first post on the new category)!!

I see an extendable z shape robot

I just see only long robots!

I see an elevator robot

I don’t know yet. I’m foreseeing an over optimized clawbot with a claw that is able to rotate 360 degrees to flip the cups and scoring materials around to the correct orentiation. I’m pretty sure such an idea won’t get around much though, I feel like it would be too inefficient. Will still make a CAD Design for it though!

Drivetrain wise, I feel we will see some slower ones, especailly for the robots that extend to the maximum height limit and those stuck on a 22 watt drive. Weight balance is going to be an issue, and the faster a drivetrain is, the higher chance a “high” robot is going to fall over or fail during a match. Either way, this season is about to be pretty darn interesting.

anything about a width extension limit? if not we will see more wall-bots

They only said a 18" height limit

It will mainly be based off of the expansion limits so I say we wait till game manual releases before we make our crazy ideas.

A forklift type robot would be cool, with a claw that can pick up pins. But I honestly think some kind of chain mechanism will become the meta.
I think we’ll see 4 motor drives as the most common, and 5.5s for the arms. But I also think more skilled teams will find a way to use PTO since it will give them a good torque/speed advantage to use during the “showdown”.

The robots I see that are going to be used are the ones that were used in the game “In The Zone”

thats only for when your in the middle, but endgame expansion limit is 50 in

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

It will be really interesting to see how people will rotate the cups 360 degrees though. Really excited!

Don’t forget about Skyrise! In the Zone has really similar game objects, but it looks like the gameplay of Skyrise might be a tad more similar. We aren’t placing pins on top of one another on a mobile goal, we are placing them on multiple, immovable construction stations.

This might be horrible but what about a 180 mech like in mix&match?

yea that’s how my robot was for high stakes I was a freshman for high stakes with no one really on my team so I was still figuring things out and the other person on my team that helped a little we wanted to do the climbing so we made arms for the robot we had two arms and when they were extended up we tipped over a few times, People in Texas region 4 probably remember the red claw bot from highstakes.

I’m thinking a conveyor bot. Like the ones in Mix and Match. but instead of it falling into the chamber it falls into the scoring place. With a loading thingy like pushback. IDK if it would work.

That would probably work , but I don’t think it would be very efficient

As an IQ team (going into VRC) i’m pretty sure that the main advantages of the 180-mech were:

1: the convenient two pin flipping, as the pins would be funneled into the correct spots in a bar

2: the height did not have to change, and the pins would just go in at one end and flip to the other end at the same height to be lifted by the bar using a cascade/four-bar

3: the absolutely necessary flipping of pins to get high scores

4: the asymmetrical nature of the pins from up to down

These points aren’t there in override, and so the 180 mech wont the best robot for the game, but it would probably still work reasonably well as a starting design

It’ll all depend on the game manual release though, and I can see a lot of parallels with Mix and Match…

I could see the mix and match designs be used sometimes defiantly for flipping the cones. It will be interesting how the match loader works.

Theres a few things I think all crazy good bots are going to have to have down:

  1. The ability to reverse the vertical orientation of pins and cups. You might want to reverse the position of a cone to put your color on top/bottom depending on the situation. You could also want to do the same for cups in your possession, to cover an opposing color or reveal your own.

  2. The ability to swap the position of possessed pins and cups. Let’s say you’re holding a pin on top of a cup, but the goal you want to score into doesn’t already have a pin inside of it to place the cup on top of. You’d need to either abandon your cup to place the pin first, or be able to reverse your items’ places to drop the pin first while also maintaining your color as the visible one.

  3. All of this needs to be light enough to be lifted <= 50 inches. Not only is a lift system going to struggle lifting a lot of weight so high, you’re also gonna be getting tipped over by the drafts from the venue’s AC system if you aren’t stable enough.

Thats all I’ve got so far. The match loader is certainly interesting this year. A human-controlled deployment system is new, at least from my knowledge. Some sort of clamping system for endgame might be useful to hold yourself in place, but that seems like something that’ll be illegal.

I think we are going to see a revisit to the past, personally. I see some revivial of a set up similiar to the ones used to In The Zone.
