What do you hope to see at Worlds 2021?

I’m going to defer you to @Brad_Lauer to answer questions like these

connor what the hell are you talking about

RECF needs to have profit to put towards achieving their goal of spreading STEM knowledge I think.

what.

they already said that the reason for the high price is not only for world’s cost they need to cover costs across all their programs. Introducing the difference between the For-Profit VEX and the 501c3 RECF is just going to create another redundant discussion.

I just want to clarify that we wouldn’t go because our team doesn’t like LRTs, the cost does play a part but it’s more or less he experience itself. It’s okay though, Dan, the GDC, and everyone else involved have done amazingly given the circumstances and I appreciate their boundless hard work.

“The RECF exchanges money for goods and services”

Yes Connor this is how money works…

You all are playing a dangerous game. Please don’t get this thread shut down before Mr. Lauer answers my question, please.

To answer the OP, I want some of the interaction that comes with Worlds.

When we went to worlds for Turning Point, the interactive experience was INCREDIBLE!!! We’re walking miles around this massive convention center, talking to teams from all around the world, seeing DRow 4 GDC flyers plastered everywhere.

All of that is nearly impossible, but surely we can do something.

How can we get this during virtual worlds? Here are some suggestions:

  • Digital stickers!!! Could a team send an image to the RECF as their “sticker” that they can then “give out” to other teams (in the chat)?
  • DRow 4 GDC involvement!!! How can we get the DRow 4 GDC alliance into Worlds? Could we have short video “advertisements” promoting DRow’s greatness? Could a team register as a supporter of DRow 4 GDC that then allows them to send DRow 4 GDC stickers in the chat (or does something else?)?
  • Hmmm, what are DRow, Grant Cox, DanMantz, and Brad_Lauer (I’m too scared to ping them :grimacing:) going to be doing during worlds? I’m sure Brad will be helping with the tech, Dan Mantz writing up his speech (JK, he’s probably doing the most of anyone), etc. Would it be too much to ask to have someone pop into matches or skills runs to say something nice to the teams? I know that I would love it if DRow dropped in on one of our team’s skills runs, or Dan Mantz popped in to say hi during one of our LRT matches
  • Numbers for this idea

Assuming that each worlds event is completely full (unrealistic) there are 216+216+300 = 732 teams. Let’s assume that each interaction with is approximately 1 minute long. To interact with each team personally, that would take 3 hours for 4 people, not that feasible. But technically they can hit 4 teams if they just drop into an LRT match. Then (216/4) + (216/4) +300 = 408 interactions. That would take 1 hour 42 minutes for 4 people. Couldn’t these 4 people make some time to interact with teams?

I’m not expecting any of these ideas to make or break anyone’s participation, but I think they would be fun.

clearly the solution is to have the KEC on a minecraft server with localized chat

As someone that runs a non-profit that also supports a wildly popular program (Hey Dan!) my last thought at night is about sponsors and my first thought is about sponsors. I have a never ending stream moving money out for new teams, struggling teams, new events, etc. And I daily need to find the sponsor to pay that stream.

Y’all go “If I win Powerball I’m gonna buy a Tesla” and I go “I’m never going to need to cold call a sponsor again”

Non-profits balance a tightrope of getting donations an fees to stay alive.

And while I have comments about how they spend money -
“Indoor fireworks - Maybe”,
“Dan wears a sequined tuxedo at worlds - umm, a mobile disco ball?”,
“We spend an epic amount of money to deliver remote events to teams that are locked down? - Oh yes, lets do that!!”

Hindsight is always 20-20 and anyone that knew 2020 was going to be this has some amazing vision.

@JD6 ,
Thanks for your patience. I just realized that your question about why teams were asked to pick LRS or LRT instead of both still needed an answer. When it became clear (in January) that our in-person VEX Worlds wasn’t going to happen to in 2021, the REC Foundation needed to decide if we could find a way to support a competitive championship event using the technology that we had developed. Instead of promising that we could find the resources to integrate Skills Challenges and a tournament experience into a single system (commit to more development work), we decided that we would focus on improving the experiences with LRT and LRS independently to provide the best experience possible with both. If the season had went as planned, we wouldn’t be answering this question at all, but we all had to adapt to meet the needs of our amazing community given the circumstances. We sincerely think that we’ve got an amazing, albeit unconventional, Live Remote VEX Worlds planned for teams! Thanks for joining us, and thanks for your support.

Best,
Brad

Thank you for taking time to answer. I can surely understand the reasoning. Quality > quantity. I’m glad to hear that RECF has taken the time to prioritize the community. It is much appreciated. I look forward to seeing some of the amazing things to happen at this year’s world championship.

I hope there will be some sort of way to talk to other teams who’ve made it, outside of the forum, I mean. Meeting a bunch of awesome, really cool teams and/or people was part of my motivation to make it, and now that I have, and it’s virtual, it kinda makes me sad. : (
