Hey im new to Vex V5 robotics, what is a good way to start a new wheelbase? How many motors should I have?
Generally, top teams like to use 6 motors on their drive, to increase power and reduce burnout. However, a 4-motor drive is ok for a newer team.
This can help you with speeds and gear ratios. Try to pick one a bit slower, and maybe move to a faster ratio on your next bot
I would listen to @Micahy321’s advice, and also go to Drive Trains | Ascend. Read through the first 4 sections about screw joints, boxing, bearing flats, and friction, and then possibly try building the drive base at the end to gain an understanding of how to build a drive base in general. This is totally acceptable as a new team, just make sure to credit them in your notebook.
Personally, start by building a basic VEX robot, like a clawbot, to get a basic understanding of how the V5 system works. Then you should experiment with the other drivetrains above.
