Im building a type of 180 bot that can also score standoff. I’m still designing it, but when its done it could be good. I’m looking forward to seeing all the meta and/or creative bots for this year!
We are building a revolver. It’s fast, efficient, and easy to drive.
S Slope. It’s undoubtedly the best. (makes a ‘dusting off shirt gesture)
I like the front to back but, it kind of depends on your strategy. We are planning on using the match loaders a lot.

Me and my team made a scorpion. Beam.
My team is building a 180 mech bot. Super awesome. Do you guys have any ideas on how we could use pneumatics on it?
Pneumatics on a 180 mech are generally used on the claw in the front and on the “iron finger” in the back.
Our league is elementary/4-6th grade, with a fair number of beginner teams. We have a mix of Hueys/derivative clawbots, a few Pinhead-style bots, and a few conveyors with/without revolver. The most advanced team built a 180, but had a hard time tuning it and also driving it and went to a revolver.
i mean 180 mech, not scorpion
I think that the 180 is the design to go with this year, it is fast efficient and extremely high scoring. The revolver is good but I think that it’s max score just isn’t high enough to get to the highest levels of competetion
180 mech, scorpion, pintex… same general thing.
Hi, this is my first time using vex forum, I need help, is it possible to build 180 mech without pneumatics? I think we have a kit but I’m not sure how to get it, I’m technically no part of the team. Anyway, I need to know asap, I have never built before and I have around 1-2 weeks to build it from scratch.
You can, it’s just difficult. If you want a full 180 bot function and you have differentials, you can theoretically make a diffy PTO (power-take-off; motor share mechanism) that shares power from two motors between your 180 mech and your beam lift. It may however be extremely difficult to compact and have torque issues. From there you would dedicate one motor to a 2 pin clamp on your 180 (done with a gear train) and 1 motor to a beam clamp (again, weird and difficult to build, but doable). IMO if you want to go for a non-pneumatic 180, it’s more worth it to dedicate 1 motor to a pin claw and 1 to a GROUNDED beam claw. Then you only have a 180 function and no beam lift. It scores less but for ease of build and simplicity, I believe it’s well worth it without access to pneumatics. Your other option would be a conveyor/ revolver, and I think this would be better. Conveyor is much much MUCH easier to build/ tune than a 180. Without pneumatics you could do a 3 motor conveyor, 2 motor drive, and 1 motor door on the back similar to the Ben Lipper styled conveyor. I believe this is probably the better choice for you if you haven’t built before and need to from scratch. Some good places to start would be joining the Capped Pins discord (sorry if this is advertising and needs to be edited out mods) where you can get almost immediate help from some very high-caliber teams with years of experience. Maybe also check out Ben Lipper’s conveyor robot on YouTube and just scroll around the search term “Vex IQ Mix and Match” and YouTube to find a place to start. Document everything that inspires choices you make in a notebook of sorts (if you are competing) and make sure to put your own engineering twists and evolution on anything you find.
TLDR: As someone who is a pretty decent/ experienced builder (I like to think so at least and I hope people would agree lol (not trying to brag at all sorry if it comes across as that)) I built a motor-less 180. It was difficult for me. Like really difficult. For a first time builder, the conveyor is so much simpler. In comparison to the probably 20-25 hours motor-less 180 took, a decent conveyor took about 3 (solo-build time).
TLDR for the TLDR lol: Doable, but more worth it to build conveyor.
I’m building a bot similar to 360, but with a taller grabber. I’m determined, because my school is trying to not go to tourneys for high school, but the other robotics teacher is fighting it like crazy. She even got me pneumatic pieces for my design
Do you know where build instructions are?
You aren’t allowed to copy or use build instructions from any other designs except for the herobot. (getting G4-rolled should be a thing now.)
