Why Are Commercial Standoff Lengths Limited?

I was browsing through the vex website to purchase more standoffs, and I saw they go up to 6’‘. However, the game manual limits commercially bought standoffs to 2.5’'.

Why are commercial standoffs limited? Seems like it’s arbitrary and makes inspection a little harder, considering it’d be very hard to tell VEX standoffs from commercial ones.

well great question for Q&A!

I wish I knew.

oh that one is easy! when a team presents a shiny standoff in a vibrant color that does not have same width as VEXs… have a bunch of them discarded at event - added to pile of dubious pneumatic tubing that had printed something like 1-800-pneumatics.com label

But back to original point. if standoffs should have same cross sectional dimensions as vex, then just state that in Game Manual..

But there are standoffs out there that are the exact dimensions, color, material, and threading as the ones provided by VEX, and are probably cheaper if you buy a lot of them.

Robosource is usually good about selling VEX legal products, and even they sell 6’’ black standoffs without labeling them as “not V5RC legal” (though the black color would give them away during inspection).

Yeah I’ll ask my advisor to post one when we come back to school. Thank you!

The 2.5" part of that rule could refer to the spacers preceding it? Idk but a 2.5" washer doesn’t really make sense, making me think that part of the rule is strictly for the non threaded spacers

Update: This seems to have been clarified in the new manual. Commercial standoffs up to 6’’ are now legal.
