I am attempting to build my first x-drive and i’m not sure, does the shape of the base have to be a square. What I mean is does the length of the base have to be the same as the width. All of the ones I have seen are the square shape and I’m curious if it has to be that way.

it doesn’t have to be square. turning is slightly better if it’s square I think, but rectangular ones will work fine.
