Going to answer on behalf of basically any Singapore team since I’m here: The system they gave was old and only displayed WP and SP. AP was coded into the tournament manager but they didn’t display it there. That’s how some teams with a lower SP can rank higher than a team with higher SP.
Just wondering, what made you think that the claw bot was impractical in theory?
I had the same sentiments as you when I first saw the claw bot
Please don’t!
I am asking my junior teams to build a robot that’s similar to your’s for the end-of-term scrimmage ![]()
Honestly, I can imagine there will be lots of replicates of your robot-in-1-day if there is a reveal ![]()
Did you guys have a two month season? Why did it end so soon after the game’s reveal? I haven’t even had a competition yet in my area.
Thank you!!
Mainly it is because of the school testing schedule. Also it allows the real season(the build up to worlds) to be more than 6 months long.
Nice robot! A couple of questions. I love the chassis especially.
-
I don’t see any IME’s or quad encoders. Did you do autonomous and programming skills based upon timing?
-
What is the function of the standoffs on the catapult? Does it help keep the stars in the right spot? Or just look cool?
-
What is the purpose of the nylon spacers on the back bars? To get a good alignment on the fence? The screws would not hold as tight with those spacers.
Thank you very much. As for your questions:
-
Yes all the programming was done using timing with the exception of the potentiometer on the dumper.
-
The standoffs on the catapult help to prevent stars, especially their pointed ends, from getting into the small gaps. This will allow for stars to be in a better position to be launched. Of course looking cool was a much welcomed side effect.
-
I presume you are referring to the nylon spacers between the top of the tower for the dumpster and the small c channel brace. Yes it does allow for better alignment against the fences, as it lets us back into the higher fences without worrying that the gears for the dumpster might hit the fence.
It is definitely not ideal. But with the shortage of time for SingVex, most of the time we ended up using timing. But we will definitely be adding in all the necessary sensors and encoders for the skills challenges.
But that said, this year, it is only half the field, the error incurred by using timing alone is not as bad as other seasons. So it is a good quick fix ![]()
As what @tabor473 has said, it is really the way Singapore’s school calendar is totally different from USA.
Moreover, there are also other major robotics competitions in the later part of the year as well.
Well, the season is not actually over.
Guess what - among the 6 teams that were in the finals, and as much as how tough the competition was, only 8066X has confirmed a spot for next year Worlds (the number of spots awarded to SingVex is really miserable).
That means, for the rest of the teams that are aiming to go for Worlds, they will need to work even harder by going for either other overseas competitions or relying on their skill challenge scores ![]()
Considering Singapore is such a strong region for worlds every year, they should be offered more spots to worlds IMO ![]()
Thanks for the affirmation.
Well… I certainly hope that @Karthik is reading the threads on (the good things that are happening in) Singapore and will consider making some adjustments to the allocation of spots ![]()
I know currently it is solely based on the rate of growth… which is terribly difficult for small countries.
Edit: Just remember that Karthik is not in-charge of the allocation… sigh…
Just a few questions here…
-
Does the team use the catapult in launching stars often in driver control ? Or is the dumper more preferable for matches ?
-
Can the catapult be launch cubes over without relying on the fence?
-
How many stars does the robot usually “intake” in matches ?
Once again, 8059D’s robot is really impressive, there is really so much to learn from Singaporean teams, and this reveal was really insightful! ![]()
And lastly, sorry for such a weird question, but do the students or does the teacher film and edit these reveal videos ? The reveal videos are pretty cool!
They do used it during driver control.
The dumper is definitely more efficient. But the catapult is really useful in catching the opponents by surprise.
At the moment, the team will still need to work on the catapult efficiency before it can be the main scoring method.
But it is really fun to see how the catapult can shoot the stars across just when the opponent is trying to rush to the fence to block the robot ![]()
Think it is more like the catapult only have enough force to launch the cubes over when the robot is right next to the fence.
During practice, I have seen the robot dumping 4 stars across, and even a star and a cube together.
But during matches, think the average is about 2 stars.
From the driver point of view, it is not easy to remain calm and discipline to go around gathering 4 stars before dumping, especially when your opponents are throwing stars and cubes are such a fast rate.
Thank you once again.
It is always nice to know that we have supporters around the world ![]()
So far all the reveal videos by 8059 series are filmed and edited by the students.
I do pass them some footages from matches and encouraged them to do the reveals, but the rest are all by them.
In fact, once the members reached 15yo onwards, I will only discuss with them about their robot designs and let them have as much free play as possible.
Yep, we all have seen our regions allocations go down. But I prefer the earn your way in view RECF/IFI have taken over grandfathered teams and overly complex structures of other programs.
Oh, and make worlds bigger! There’s still room in the convention center! That might give you one more spot for Singapore.
Singapore is a populous place, you need more teams! (google says there are 5MM people in Singapore)
Great job as always!
The only problem with getting more teams in Singapore is the cost.
It Costs more to ship parts to Singapore than the parts are worth themselves most of the time…
Can Vex have a Prime-like free shipping option? I’m sure it would be very popular.
Anyway, that robot is awesome, even more so considering the short timeframe. We haven’t even started building a drive yet, and you guys already finished and competed with that robot.
RobotMesh has free shipping over $50, but it only applies to US.
How does does it work out that Singapore only gets a middle school spot and no HS spots?
I thought the same thing when I looked at his post. After asking @meng , he cleared up that 8059D qualified through the HS excellence and wasnt in the finals. In his post he says only one team in the Finals had qualified. That being 8066X with the Middle school excellence
