For College Gateway,

If we were to lock ourselves onto any part of the field would that be considered “Damaging the field” If so, if every precaution was taken to not damage the field i.e. “Bumpers” on the mechanisms would it be legal to do so then?

No, locking onto the field is never permitted, no matter what precautions are taken. It is considered an inherent risk of damaging the field, and thus a violation of <R3a>, quoted below.
