Drivetrain fricton


this drive mainly the top motor isnt working the motor dosent really start but it does spin some time

also the main issue is in the motors I want to say a advance thanks for tips on making it better but for now my teamates and I are looking to fix it first

Top motor does not appear to be well seated, it is at an angle compared to the others.

Also, your gearing is weird, the center wheel will spin at different rate than the others.

Time for basic trouble shooting.

That motor is definitely installed at a weird angle. That poor alignment is creating friction for sure. And what is that silver torx screw doing poking out of that C-Channel?

If it spins some time, either there is so much friction from the poor alignment or the axle is not pushed far enough into the motor to engage properly. Or both.

Remove the axle and green gear. Pull the motor completely off. Slide the axle only (without the gear) back into the pillow blocks and spin it by hand. Make sure the axle rotates freely inside the pillow blocks. Fix any alignment, friction or bent axle issues until the axle does spin freely.

Reinstall the motor correctly. Put the axle and gear back together and make sure the axle is all the way inserted into the motor. Test it.

never mind, here it is… it keeps getting activity although being years old.

the other problem is that center wheel. It’ll spin at a different rate than the others, which for obvious reasons is bad. if you still want something in the middle so you can park, what you can do is make a slightly smaller wheel with a gear and rubber from flex wheels zip tied around it.

Are you using green cartridges or blue cartridges for your motors?

Your gear ratio is switching, so on the outer wheels they have a higher gear ratio while the middle wheel has a lower gear ratio making the drivetrain fight itself for which wheel moves.



So are you using a green cartridges in your motors or blue cartridges in your motors?

Sorry I don’t have a picture I can give you right now, I don’t currently have access to my computer or any vex parts. For the wheel though, the concept is pretty simple. All you need to do is replace the middle wheel with a gear with flex wheel rubber around it. It doesn’t matter that it won’t normally touch the ground (it actually shouldn’t otherwise you’ll be back to the original problem just with a janky traction wheel instead) and doesn’t spin at the same speed since it only exists to give you an additional contact point when going over the bump. The gear size you use doesn’t really matter, it just needs to be the same size or slightly larger than the other one connecting the rest of the drivetrain
