Favorite IQ game

I know that there are multiple threads for VRC favorite games, but none I have seen for IQ. So…
What’s your favorite IQ Game?

  • Rise above
  • Squared away
  • Ringmaster
  • Crossover
  • Bankshot
  • Highrise
  • Add It Up
  • Rings-N-Things

Edit: I forgot to put next level on this, look below for a new one.

My favorite IQ game that I played in was ringmaster. There were so many ways to score, there was lots of robot variety, and autonomous was fun for it. I only participated in Ringmaster and Next level before I moved up to EDR, but I saw squared away and rise above, and none of them look as fun as ringmaster was. That was also a great season for me, I went to worlds for the first time, and the first time, at least for me, was the best.

I only played squared away, so I can’t really vote.
Although, my older brother played in some of those, so I can say from helping him with building and watching him play I can say Bankshot was my favorite.

I competed from Bankshot to Ringmaster and Ringmaster is my favorite by far. I’m probably biased since Ringmaster was our best year but just everything from the robot designs (We had a revolver bot) and how the best teams had auto sorting for the rings it was just the most interesting competition.

Yeah the games with the most variety are the best. I’ve only done squared away and rise above so far, but squared away was a lot more fun

I’ve officially played Ringmaster and Next Level, but I’ve built robots for Ringmaster through Rise Above. I think that Ringmaster was my favorite, but Highrise and Crossover seemed like cool games too. I’ve never played them, so I could be totally wrong.

Even though I competed with a clawbot, I throughly enjoyed Highrise. In my opinion, this is the one IQ game where a clawbot could score the most in. Even though there was only 1 game element, there were many different robot design. Plus Highrise cubes made for some good “small scale” tests for Tower Takeover concepts.

I enjoyed ringmaster because that is the season, in which I first competed in Worlds on my previous team.

Darn, Next Level isn’t on here. That’s probably my favorite.

My favorite game was crossover, especially the balancing act. Bankshot was also pretty fun(my team had a robot that could shoot the balls using a catapult). Those were the only two years I was in IQ, but went to worlds in crossover after winning middle school excellence in my state.

You’re so right, @Milo409B. I totally forgot that one. Let me see if I can fix it.

I absolutely LOVED ringmaster, but it definitely wasn’t the best teamWork game. "You stay over there, and I’ll stay over here. ez dubs. Not great for teamwork. And Oh MAN That bonus tray was EPIC!!! Everything about that bonus tray just had me :ok_hand: :ok_hand: :ok_hand:.

Next Level was also pretty nice, but the meta was a bit too good. There wasn’t much competition for the metA. But otherwise, hanging was fun, and stacking was also pretty fun.

Squared Away was an astronomical game. As with most games that use a mobile-goal. As @owen169 said:

The intensity of this game was insane!!! There were two separaTe final matches where we would’ve lost if us or the other team didn’t push in the last low cube! (One of them we actually did lose) Looking back, as usual, I wish I had learned to build the meta-bot, because those looked very fun. That was also the year I realized how crazy the VEX community on the internet was (especially in IQ, i.e. step-by-step instructions for the metabot.) Another annoying thing that year was the knocking cubes off of high posts. That happEned quite a bit with rookie teams when we were with them. But it was always fun to switch driver positions with our partner to get a better view of our side of the field. Great teamwork, Great scoring, but also, somewhat easily maxout-able (although I guess it didn’t happen until the very end of the year compared to early-mid season this season.)

Bankshot was a lot of fun, we had a one ball at a time shooter that worked like 20% of the time. It was our second year. But for the same reasons as Ringmaster’s, but multiplied 10-fold, not an amazing game.

(Although I do really wish I got to compete in anotheR shooting game in IQ. That would be epic.)

I personally think crossover was a bit overhyped. The teamwork aspect was probably the best of all the games, but the excess of hexballs at the end of the match was a bit annoyinG. Also the fact that all you need is a pushbot and you could make it really far was also a bit iffy. My opinions are pretty mixed on this one.

Highrise was just epic. We didn’t really have a functioning bot that year for the one tournament we went too, but it was still super exciting to watch the high-level matches. Exceeept… Seeing the cubes fall out from the starting position was super annoying to me. I don’t know why, it didn’t affect me in any way, but it just really got to me lol. Also the fact that vex tried to erase the fact that ringmAster happened by selling replacement cubes is actually really funny . Seriously though, good move VEX. Those cubes are much better.

Add It Up was also a game I was not a part of, but it looked like tons of fun. There hasn’t been a roller-intake Meta game in IQ since. But actually, that’s probably a good thing…

And finally, Rings-N-Things. I know of a few times I will tell someone about rings-n-things and they’ll be like:

“No way that was an actual game!!!”
I also thought it to be too crazy to be true. I mean, PENN TENNIS BALLS!!!

In conclusion, At the moment I don’t think I can rank them all, but they were all good for their own reasons, some more than others, and some a lot more than others. Can’t wait to see what happens to IQ next !

Unless...
I already know...

I say the game needs. At least 5 ways for me to score. Then you get maximum robot variety and there is not a single winning robot.

That’s not entirely true. In ringmaster, lots of the meta bots had flap intakes, similar to ball rollers. I also liked ringmaster because In that one, the meta (sweeper bot with an auto-sorter) was very hard to build. So it wasn’t like next level, where virtually everyone could build one. I also loved the high scoring in ringmaster, where people were getting 200+ points easy. I was there for the highest score made, over 400 points.

I agree with you there. During our local tournaments, we were using the tray for the extra 20 points. At worlds, they were using the bonus tray for the bonus 15 rings, because they had cleared the field!!!

Ringmaster had that. I mainly saw 4 ways most people scored: The already color-sorted pegs on the far wall, the sweeper style, the rows of 3 rings lined up beside the poles, and the 3-prong floor picker-upper.
Also, I liked ringmaster because we had the highest programming score in states-around 64 points. not amazing, but pretty good. I think we might have won through skills, but there was an error, and we ended up running 4 auton and 2 driver instead of 3 each.

That’s a good point. That’s not quite the roller-intake type I was referring to, but that does work.

Me too man. High scoring games I think might be the best.

I have seen that video about 50 times. I also got a picture with the discobots that year, because I totally looked up to them lol. I’ll try to get it on here later.

Not necessarily. Some teams could stick to like 2-3 scoring ways, because they are the fastest and easiest. And then balancing the scoring for all the different scoring ways is just really hard. Making games is just hard, man!!!

Why we need @DRow on the GDC, right?

That’s one of two reasons, and the other one is hidden in my initial post…
